Philo & Mary Burtch in Rome, Oneida, NY 1860
1860 Federal Census shows Philo Burtch as a carpenter, age abt. 27, in Rome, Ward 2, Oneida County, New York. (The name is incorrectly indexed as "Britch" in some places.)Philo is with wife Mary, age 20, and daughters Grace, born 1856, and Hattie, born 1859. My ancestor, their son John M. Burtch, was born in Rome in 1861, and he died March 3, 1898, in Hamilton, Madison County, NY, as John M. Burtch Crawe, as he was adopted by David & Roxa Crawe of Earlville, Madison Co., NY. Sometime between the 1860 census and the 1870 census, the three Burtch children, Grace, Hattie, and John, were placed in an orphan asylum. Their uncle Abner Hall Burtch of Fonda, Montgomery, NY, was their guardian. What happened to Philo & Mary Burtch, the parents of these three children? Philo is buried in Caughnawaga Cemetery in Fonda, NY, but no death date is given there. I can find nothing about his wife Mary at all.
Philo Burtch's parents were John Burtch (son of Morris Burtch) and Hannah Hall Burtch.
