Then I found his World War I draft registration card. Here is what appears on the card, signed June 5, 1917.

They are close neighbors to the family of Frank (M60) and Elizabeth (F58) Burton, who are married for 39 years. One might assume that Frank and Elizabeth Burton might be his parents.
In the 1900 census, Franklin (M51) and Elizabeth (F48) Burton appear in Falls of Blaine Voting Precinct No. 3 in Lawrence Co, KY. They are enumerated as being married for 28 years. They have two sons, James L. (M21) and Jasper N. (M25), that were born before 1880. They also had a son named William E. Burton, born in Feb 1887. Remember the 1917 Draft Registration Card. This William E. Burton is definitely your Ed Burton.

In the 1850 census, the family of Andrew (M51) and Susan (F46) Burton appear in Morgan Co, KY. Both were born in VA. Their eldest child was David Burton (M20), born in KY and their youngest child was Franklin Burton (M 6/12).
