I have posted several times (as have several other people) on this forum and the Ashley Family Forum about Ellafair Bush . Ellafair Bush and Joseph Cephas Ashley are my husband's great grandparents. He descends from them through their son, Joseph Eugene Ashley and Sarah Jeanette Sikes Brown and then through their daughter, Angie Iola Ashley Dorn.
In our search for Ellafair's ancestors we have never been successful, so I am trying the "back door" approach. My mother-in-law (Iola Ashley Dorn) often talked about "Uncle Lee Bush". If she called him "Uncle Lee Bush" (she always used the full name), it stands to reason that he was related to her grandmother, Ellafair. Their ages would indicate that they could be siblings or maybe cousins. Both were born in Georgia; Ellafair in 1849 and Lee, per Census info, in 1855.
Lee left Georgia, went to Texas, and ended up in Indian Territory/Oklahoma. We are sure of this because a little after 1910 Iola'a parents packed up their 2 children along with a few possessions and left Georgia, following him to Oklahoma. We have found both families living in Stephens County in the 1920 Oklahoma Census. The Ashley's lived near the town of King and the Bush family live near McPherson.
We have gone back to the 1900 Census in Indian Territory and found Lee L. Bush ( born July 1855 in GA) and his wife Mary E. (born Sept 1862 in AL). They said that they had been married for 15 years and Mary said that she had born 7 children, all still living: Lillie L. (Dec 1883 in TX) Clarence W. (Dec 1885 in TX) Allen B. (-?- 1888 in TX) Hubert (Nov 1890 in TX) Eller (Apr 1893 in TX) Obidiah C. (Nov 1894 in IT,) Sylvester L. (Nov 1898 in IT)
In the 1910 Oklahoma Census the couple said that they had been married for 23 years and now had 8 children living with them. There is no mention of the oldest 2 kids (Lillie and Clarence). Allen B. was the oldest at home and he was 21. The others were; Herbert (19 yrs) Ella B. (16 yrs) -?- C. (14 yrs.)(this was probably Obidiah), Lee C. (11 yrs) (possibly Sylvester) Phebe -?- (8 yrs) Rosa M. (6 yrs) and -?-phal/phall (2 yrs). The last child's name is unreadable.
In 1920 L.L. Bush (70 yrs) and Mary (64 yrs) were living with only 3 children. ????Son M W Sing. 23 Farm labor. (probably Obidiah) LeeSon M W Sing21Farm labor Opal Daug F W Sing7(I think this was the unreadable child on the previous census and that she was 17, not 7.) Their son, A.B. Bush was living near his parents with his wife, A.Laura, and 2 small sons.
Do these names and places ring any bells? I have some more Census info from Texas in 1880, but I'm not sure the Lee Bush there is "our Uncle Lee Bush". Thanks for reading this. I realize this is probably more than most of you want to know, but if anyone can shed light on these people, I would appreciate the help. If you can tell me about Lee Bush, maybe it will crack the brick wall that is around Ellafair.
