I'm hoping there is someone who has information on this New Jersey Bush family, and in my search, I find there may be several Bush families from the area in the late 1700's.
My maternal Michigan roots stem from the Shuster (sometimes misspelled Schuster) lineage descending from Daniel Shuster, veteran of the Revolutionary War.We have been fortunate to have a genealogy of descendants in print since that time.
My gg-grandfather, Sanford Shuster (1854 - 1927) m. Esther Bush (1857 - 1904) in 1876 in Shiawassee County, Michigan. In our written history, little is otherwise given about our Bush ancestors.I have traced this family in the US Federal Census with a subscription to Ancestry.com and have compared findings with our Shuster books of genealogy.
BUSH, John R.
I have also been fortunate to locate a biographical sketch of her father in a Michigan Portrait & Biographical Album of Shiawassee County. As is commonly known, these biographies can contain a lot of information, but taken with a grain of salt because they can also contain errors. This one has a few obvious mistakes but very interesting nonetheless.
His name was John R. Bush, who was b. 25 Mar 1819 in Seneca, Ontario County, New York, to a (father) Thomas Bush "a native of New Jersey" and (mother) Jane Roberts Bush, born in Ireland; she died sometime around 1829 (when her son was about ten years in age).In the sketch, it gives John's first wife's name as "Jane Robertson," which is in error because it was Anna _____, the author obviously crossing some wires while sipping a little wine back at the Owosso Hotel sometime before the date of publication in the late 1800's.
For John R. Bush in Shiawassee County, Michigan, US Census records agree father b. NJ, mother b. Ireland, but sometimes conflict with date of birth, which in 1900 was Mar 1817, but others 1880 and 1870 give 1824.
To make things a little difficult, some other family treas on Ancestry.com give a Thomas Jefferson Bush as his father and Jane Robertson as his mother. However, I have not found any supporting information that would make this tie out. With other websites, I find a Thomas Jefferson Bush from NJ who did not have a son John R.
The same family trees have somehow connected his Census wife "Anna" b. about 1820 to an "Anna HAND" which is a possibility, again unsupported.
Now, Enter the REV. John L. BUSH
One of the most intriguing things about this historical sketch is not that John R. Bush remarried to a Victoria Reithell (let's chop this name up...it is really "Reitzel" in various records and she's from Germany), it notes the following:
"The Bush family was originally from Prussia and a family record is preserved which covers its history for two hundred and fifty years. This has been carefully prepared by the Rev. John L. Bush, one of the members of the family."
Now I can find a "John L. Bush" (22 Jan 1798 - 1865) who d. in Bento, Yates County, NY, but cannot seem to tie out the lineage as a "family member" to our John R or father Thomas.
My Questions / Query
I'm curious to know if this genealogical gem of John L. Bush exists, and if it is available online...or if someone happens to know how to access the file of 250 years of family history.
Also, I would be greatful if the above is familiar to anyone and if anyone can be of assistance.
Thank you in advance for reading my post, and for your consideration.
