Hello Fellow Bushongs, Descendants and Bushong Researchers,
Some of you are just reading of the Theory of the Only Surviving Colonial American Bushong Line and the new DNA evidence, while others are reluctant to accept it, believing in "Multiple Bushong Lines Theory"and others just aren't sure. If you're one of these, then this article is for you. For those who are already in the "Only One Bushong Family" camp, this may not add anything to what you already know.
EVOLUTION OF THE THEORY - FROM EXISTING EVIDENCE
SEPTEMBER 1, 2011: Announcement of the A to Z charting of Find a Grave Bushongs into the Bushong United GEDCOM. The resulting family charts were three family trees, two with significant numbers of descendants, Hans John Bushong's and Andrew/Andreas Bushong's and a smaller line of 169 for Johannes Bushong, husband of Barbara Kreighbaum.
SEPTEMBER 6, 2011: The Theory of Two Surviving Colonial American Bushongs is suggested by the complete absence of any other Bushong lines, given the shear quantity of the Find A Grave listings, and the absolute randomness of the their selection - a little bit from everywhere. This is based on the belief by many researchers that the much smaller line of Johannes is likely part of the Colonial Bushong/Boschung. Many researcher always believed the Andreas who arrived on the Recovery in 1754 was related to or was the same person as the Andreas who arrived with his father, Johan Nicholas Boschung, on the Pink "John and William" in 1732. But not having resolved the dual arrivals, it was prudent to only state what was proven. There were just the two lines of Hans and Andreas.
SEPTEMBER 12 2011: Gloria Neiger Bushong, in defense of the old "Many Bushong Lines Theory" asserts there were numerous other lines "split off" from the Colonial Bushong. She states their names were changed from Boschung to something else when they immigrated. She offered no documentation or evidence, just seventeen names and arrivals copied from Daniel Rupp's 30,000 Immigrant Names book. According to Mrs. Bushong, these names were variant spellings of Boschung: Bosang/Bosseng, Dischong, Peroning, Bussung/Hussung, Bischon, Bausum, Bison, Peronz, Biesang, Bisbing, Beissel, Bischoff, Drachel, and Noschang. Her position is they all changed their names or allowed the scribe who wrote their names to change it, virtually as they stepped on the boat.
SEPTEMBER 22 - 24, 2011: Eleven Part Series of Articles is published refuting every variant spelling of the name in the "Many Bushong Lines Theory". After researching each and every name, the claims were found to be completely without merit. Each was proven false beyond a reasonable doubt.
These are the results...
17 "New Bushongs" with variant names??
-6 Who are from real families with real names.
-4 Who signed their name IN THEIR OWN HAND.
-3 Who's LINEAGE IS KNOWN - and ARE NOT RELATED to Boschung.
-1 Who's LINEAGE IS KNOWN - and IS NOT RELATED to Boschung (withdrawn by Mrs. Bushong).
-2 Who are FRENCH CATHOLIC families.
-1 Transcription error - name not even close to Boschung.
0-Total new lines of Bushong
The two proven lines were still unchallenged.
JANUARY 14 2012: Marked the announcement of the completion of Charting the Entire 1930 Bushong Census. It was charted into the Bushong United GEDCOM, and it reconfirmed, only two Colonial Bushong Families. Yes there were a handful of Bushongs listed in 1930, who could not be charted from the Colonial lines, but they had immigrated in 19th century and were not descended from the Colonial Bushongs.
It HAS T0 BE A GIVEN THAT THE 1930 CENSUS CONTAINS THE MAJORITY OF ALL THE BUSHONGS. Any other Colonial lines of Bushong would need to have numerous descendants by the time of the 1930 Census. But they didn't. There were only two identifiable Bushong Family lines.Hans and Andreas.
So to this point all Bushongs in Find a Grave and in the 1930 Census had been identified and charted. The resulting two family lines contained over 4,500 blood descendants of the two Bushongs, Hans and Andreas. There is no credible challenge to these two lines and no evidence there are any other any other lines. There are just two lines.
WITH DNA EVIDENCE
JANUARY 12th and 25th, 2012: Mrs. Bushong blogged preliminary findingsof her DNA Project. She revealed that there are four 37 for 37 marker matches between four Bushong men, two are from Hans' line and two from Andreas'. Mrs. Bushong stated that the company, Family Tree DNA,has concluded from the tests "the four Bushong men who have been tested so far, they all originate from the same mutual ancestor." FAMILY TREE DNA SAYS THEY ALL ORIGINATE FROM THE SAME MUTUAL ANCESTOR!
Further of the results,Family Tree DNA officially states of TWO 37 marker matches...
"Your perfect match means you share a common male ancestor with a person
who shares your surname (or variant). Your relatedness is extremely
close with the common ancestor predicted, 90% of the time, in 5
generations or less and over a 95% probability within 8 generations."
Their words, a 95% probability within 8 generations.of a common ancestor. Their assessment is there's a 95% chance - the lines of Hans and Andreas are related
MARCH 5, 2012: The Theory "The Only Surviving Line of American Colonial Bushongs" is published. In it, from known family history and given the likelihood Hans and Johann Nicholas are related, their father, "Father Boschung" is selected as the target for the Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA) Then, from charted lineage of the four DNA participants, it was determined they varied from 8 to 10 generations removed from the MRCA. Then using this Most Recent Common Ancestor Calculator, here.. http://www.moseswalker.com/mrca/calculator.asp?q=1http://www.moseswalker.com/mrca/calculator.asp?q=1 . It concludes there is a 93% chance there is 8 generations anda 95% it's 9 generations to MRCA,the father of Hans and Johann Nicholas - "Father Boschung"
As is seen, the probabilities, with a 37/37 marker match, vary from expert to expert, but all show over 90% and several show a 95% probability the MRCA is Father Boschung.
The experts say there's a 95% chance Hans and Andreas are related and descended from Father Boschung, the MRCA, only taking into account two "37 for 37" matches. I'm not sure how much the probability increases when four participants match, but it's got to be higher. Perhaps when the more details are released, these questions and others can be answered.
When our proven Bushong genealogy is taken into account, the ancestry is undeniable. Simply put, before the test, we could prove two lines to Hans and Andreas, the DNA test results as well as the experts say they are from the same ancestor. With our knowledge that Hans and Johan Nicholas and Andreas immigrated a year apart, lived in the same area, and interacted with each other, added to the new DNA evidence, its easy to see..... Hans and Johan Nicholas were brothers and their father is the Most Recent Common Ancestor. It's a better than 95% chance, if you believe the experts and your genealogy.
