I am also researching a Butler line that has several points that link to your posting. 1. My ggg-grandfather John Martin Butler was in Maringo Co. AL on the 1840 & 1850 censuses. 2. His son John M. Butler married in 1860 in Jefferson Co AL in 1860 to his first cousin Margaret Artilissa Philyaw. 3 By 1870 John and Margaret are deceased and his 2 sons are living with their step-mother/aunt and grandmother Elizabeth Ann Philyaw in Lauderdale Co. AL to "be close to Butler family".
There is evidence that the parents of John Martin were John G. Butler and Elizabeth Ann Green were married in Edgefield Co SC about 1810 to 1812 and had moved to Jefferson Co AL by 1819.
