I have an application for Rev War pension for this John Butler, my ancestor.States he was born about 1752 and enlisted in the (re-formed) 2nd VA Continental Line and resided at age 56 in Laurens County, SC..He stated that he served under a Capt Thomas Barbee. It turns out that Capt Barbee was not serving in the 2nd Continental Line but with the help of Jon Stallard and some other research, was able to identify that this Capt Barbee was a "recruiter" from Fauquier County, so my John must have named his recruiter as the person he remembered .
Thus it seems probable that my John was one of those "danged Fauquier" Butlers !I have already conclusively ruled him out of the Edgefield SC Butlers, though according to the Butler DNA project (a male of my line is subject M0036), he seemed to be related closely to them and a number of other Butlers Jon has identified in his book as probable descendants of the two sons of Joshua Butler and Grace Paige.
so I am combing through all those families to find a John of similar age to mine.So far, I have found only one likely candidate, who belongs to this family:
"10. William BUTLER. Born in 1735 in Prince William County, Virginia. William died in Culpeper, Virgina in 1807; he was 72.
In 1754 when William was 19, he married Mary.
They had the following children: 11 i. William (1756-1843) ii. Armstead. Born in 1770 in Fauquier County, Virginia. Armstead died in Crittenden County, Ky in 1837; he was 67. On December 6, 1801 when Armstead was 31, he married Mary WHEATLEY, in Culpeper, Virginia. iii. Nancy. Born in 1766 in Fauquier County, Virginia. iv. Benjamin. Born in 1768 in Fauquier County, Virginia. On December 1, 1790 when Benjamin was 22, he married Mary EDWARDS, in Culpeper, Virginia. v. Sarah. Born in 1760 in Fauquier County, Virginia. Sarah married James GRIMSLEY. vi. John. vii. Spencer. viii. Joseph. ix. Charles. x. Joshua. Born about 1755."
in researching this particular family, I have found only two researchers online who posted any information about this John . One said this John died in KY, one said MO.Neither posting had any data other than a death record for "a John Butler" .
Does anyone else know anything about this John Butler that could conclusively place him anywhere else than Laurens County, SC.?Any leads are welcome.
