Moses F. Buxton
Moses F. Buxton was a person stature in the Community of Norwood, Cincinnati, Ohio. According to “Norwood, Her Homes and Her People” Moses was one of the early pioneers of Norwood. He was born on December 22, 1817 in Hamilton County, Ohio. Little is know about Moses. What we do know is that Moses married Myra Eliza Peat on November 29, 1843 in Hamilton County, Ohio. It appears that they never had any children. On April 10, 1850 Moses applied for a U.S. Passport. On September 5, 1850 the ship Sarah Sands arrived at the port of San Francisco from Panama. On board this ship were Moses F. and Aaron Buxton. According to the 1850 and 1860 census Moses was a carpenter. On April 14, 1866 Moses and other members of the Duck Creek Baptist church where given permission to withdraw their membership by letter and form a new church. This church was called Pleasant Ridge Regular Baptist Church and it was organized on April 21, 1866. Moses was a junior deacon in this new church.
According to “Norwood, Her Homes and Her People” on February 18, 1868 Moses signed an enactment that called for a election to vote on the establishment of a separate school district in the community of Norwood a suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio. I believe that the Buxton Avenue located in Norwood was named after Moses. Sometime between 1870 and 1880 Moses and his wife moved to Iowa. At his time he was listed as a capitalist and a merchant. Moses died at the end or March of the first part of April 1895. He was buried in the Pleasant Ridge Presbyterian Churchyard Cemetery, Hamilton County, Ohio. It is unclear if Moses died in Iowa or Ohio or maybe some place else. His will was filled and probated in Hamilton County, Ohio. His will was written on November 3, 1892 and indicates that he was a resident of Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio at that time. He left his estate to his wife but in the event of her death he left his estate to the children of his deceased uncle William Ferguson. At this time it is unknown who is parents were or if he was related to my ancestor Edmund Buxton. What I do know is that his mother’s maiden name was Ferguson and that she was born in Virginia and that his father was born in Ohio. My ancestor had a son Charles Henry Buxton who married Rebecca Ferguson. I believe that they may be his parents. Another clue to theory is that in 1850 Charles son Aaron also applied for a U.S. passport at the same time Moses did and on his application Moses F. Buxton was a witness and indicates that he knew Aaron very well. Question is, was Moses F. Buxton and Aaron related could that have been brothers or where they just good friends. But, there is a problem with this theory Charles and Rebecca had a daughter that was born in July 1817 Moses was born in December of 1817. There is no way that she could have two children that close together.
His wife died on December 3, 1898 in Greenfield, Adair County, Iowa. At this time it is unclear where she is buried. There is a tombstone for her and her father in the Greenfield Cemetery in Adair County, Iowa. There is also a tombstone at the Pleasant Ridge Presbyterian Churchyard Cemetery, Hamilton County, Ohio.
