Dear Mr. Byham:
Thank you very much for your post.
How about a great-grandson?
Since posting my first message, I have begun to suspect that George might have been a grandson of the Rector of Clotsworthy, the Rev. John Byam, one of Lawrence's sons. The book that we both admire, _Memoir of the Byam Family_, states that John died in prison 1n 1653, having been incarcerated in April, 1646 for his loyalty to Charles I. "The sorrowing children of John, such as survived, both sons and daughters, were disbursed over the globe."
John is said to have been born in 1583. I don't know the birth dates of his sons, but it seems conceivable (pardon the pun) that one could have been the father of George, whose birth date is given as 13 July, 1620.
Graf, by the way, is the name of my step-grandfather. My father, who died when I was six, always claimed that his original name was James Henry Byam, born 9 October, 1908 in Saugus, Massachusetts. My grandmother, Esther Alice Farrell (born 1887, Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire, England) died before I was born, but she passed on some information that came to me through my mother. The most puzzling anecdote referred to an ancestor who had contracted a tropical disease (in Barbados, perhaps?). Could this have been the father of George Byam?
This is all speculative, of course, and other possibilities exit. Can you shed any further light on the matter?
James Henry Graf
