Patsy, good to hear from you. Sorry for the delay in answering. To answer your question. The Robert Bynum you speak of that appears on the 1850 census of Jackson County, AL. This Robert was also on the 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860 census of Jackson County. He is mentioned in Jasper E. Bynum's book, "Historical Sketches of the Bynum Family, Volume One", 1916 on page 76. Jasper states the following... "Robert Bynum was born in 1800 and died in 1870. He lived with his uncle, Daniel Bynum, in South Carolina. His father died when he was small. He had two sisters, Martha and Sarah, who also lived with their uncle. When he was ten years of age he went with a family to Adair County, Kentucky. From there he moved to Scottsboro, Ala. He was about 25 years old. He never went to his home again." (sic)
How much truth there is to that is questionable. One reason I say questionable, is because I have never been able to find this so called "uncle" named Daniel Bynum. Whether Robert had two sisters named Martha and Sarah is still a guess.
My Great Grandfather, Benjamin Franklin Bynum married one of Robert Bynum's twin daughters. Her name was Martha Jane Bynum, she was known as Mattie. Robert Bynum was married to Bathsheba McElvaney they were married about 1826 probably in or near what is now known as Scottsboro. Bathsheba was born about 1808 somewhere in South Carolina. This family lived in and very near downtown Scottsboro. Today there is a street in Scottsboro named Bynum. At the end of this street there is a cemetery and it is a private cemetery named Bynum. Robert and Bathsheba are buried there along with some of their children and grandchildren. None of the graves are marked with headstones. Bathsheba died about 1851/1852 and Robert followed suit in 1869. I have his death probate. The administrator for Robert's Estate was his oldest son, John Poole Bynum. All of Robert's and Bathsheba's children are named in the probate. Both of Robert's sons served in the Civil War. The other son was Robert Hugh Bynum he married Lucy Hayward Scott on 26 Dec 1866 in Jackson County, they were married by James M. Rossen, JP. Robert Hugh Bynum will leave a very large foot print in Jackson County during his lifetime. His wife, Lucy Hayward Scott was the daughter of Robert Thomas Scott (1800-1863) and Elizabeth Ann (1809-1873). Robert Thomas Scott is the founder of Scottsboro, Jackson County, Alabama.
A grandson (Isaac Newton Bynum) of Isaac Bynum, Sr., stated in his family Bible that Robert Bynum was not a "Bynum" and was not related to the Bynum families that lived out near and in Maynard's Cove, he just used the name Bynum. He stated that Robert Bynum was in reality Robert O'Bryon. But since most of these folks are all buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Scottsboro, Alabama and considering who Robert Hugh Bynum was; I will not go and try to change things. They lived their life as Bynum and I shall leave it as Bynum. There was an event that occurred on 4 December 1972 in Scottsboro, Alabama that will long be remembered. This event was the result of actions by a grandson of Robert Hugh Bynum, his name was Hugh Otis Bynum. If a family ever had a blacksheep, Hugh Otis Bynum was it. Read the book, "Lay Down With Dogs" the story of Hugh Otis Bynum and the Scottsboro First Monday Bombing, the author is Bryon Woodfin.
No one knows really where Robert Bynum came from unless we take Jasper E. Bynum description as the gospel. I have searched both SC and KY prior to the 1830s for an answer...to this day it is still unanswered.
