I've a bit of a mystery and hope you may be able to help. After many years of searching, I've learned of reasonably reliable information showing that my ancestor Nancy Ann Kennedy [nee Herndon] was 2nd married 11 Feb. 1863? to William Kater Byrd. I've yet to learn when or where he, William Kater Byrd, was born and when or where he died and is buried. I've not found William Kater Byrd in any census, but suspect he died before 1870 possibly in Tuscaloosa Co., AL. The 1870 and 1880 censuses for Tuscaloosa Co., AL. show that Nancy Kennedy was 35 years old, but suspect she was actually age 42.It is a mystery to me why she is enumerated as Nancy Kennedy rather than Nancy Byrd. However, residing with her was the following children:
son, Elias Kennedy, age 22 daughter, Sarah Kennedy, age 17 son, David Kennedy, age 15, - my great grandfather. son, James E. Kennedy, age 12 daughter, Nancy Byrd, age 7 son, Richard Byrd, age 4
Next is from the 1880 census for Tuscaloosa Co., AL.
Nancy Kennedy, age 52 son, David W. Kennedy, age 24, my great grandfather daughter, Nancy Kennedy, age 16, born AL. son, Richard Kennedy, age 13, born AL.
I don't understand why Nancy Kennedy, age 52 is not shown as Nancy Byrd. Also don't understand why the daughter, Nancy and son Richard are recorded as Kennedy rather than Byrd.
My gg grandmother, Nancy Ann Herndon / Kennedy / Byrd died 8 July 1903 at or near Abernant, Tuscaloosa Co., AL. and is buried in the Davis Creek Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. Her gravestone is inscribed as follows:
Nancy A. Byrd born: Feb. 9, 1829 died: July 8, 1903.
Oh, the 1880 census shows that the father of Nancy Kennedy (Byrd) and her brother, Richard Kennedy (Byrd) was born in South Carolina.
I've seen speculation that William Kater Byrd and the widow, Nancy Ann Kennedy, were married in South Carolina.
Hope you may be able to shed some light on William Kater Byrd.
