The Franklin Ellis book, History of Columbia County, NY,(Everts & Ensign, Philadelphia.1878), Pg. 380 & 381 states "Edward Cadman, who settled in this town (Austerlitz) near Mount Pleasant several years before the breaking out of the Revolution, ... His children were nine in number. Lydia married Benoni Ford, and removed to western New York;Rebecca married Isaac Clark, of Spencertown;Phoebe married Turner Calkins, of Green River; Hannah married __ Ackley and went west; Edward and Joseph died in their country's service during the Revolution; George and Christopher removed to the western part of this State, and John married Phebe De Wolf and remained on the homestead. He was the father of William J. Cadman, of Mount Pleasant now eighty-three years old, and the grandfather of ex-county judge John Cadman, of Chatham.Mrs. Louisa Howes, Mrs. Phoebe Harmon, and Mrs. Maria Hubbard, of Troy, are also his grandchildren."NOTE, THIS RECORD STATES THAT HANNAH MARRIED AN ACKLEY.Note also that the list omits Sarah Cadman who married Peter Havens and moved to Michigan.
We learn from the Pine Hill Cemetery Listing, page 1, in a collection of cemetery listings at the Genesee Co. History Dept., under "Ackley, Hannah (Cadman), w/o Erasmus, d. 9-14-1840, 67 yr."We also learn that a Josiah Ackley, "b. 6-27-1791; d. 8-8-1824, 33y1m12d."
It should be noted that Pine Hill Cemetery is in the town of Elba, Genesee Co., NY.AKA Old Elba or Old Graveyard or Pioneer Cemetery. The cemetery is located in the SE corner at Main and Chapel, Elba, near Methodist Church, behind the fire hall.In a quick survey of the cemetery I found her gravestone, but not that of her son buried about 16 years earlier.
Ralph W. Muncy, in a letter to the Genesee Co. Historian,(in the Ackley file at the County History Dept.), Pg. 1., states "I have now established that Hannah, the wife of Erasmus Ackley dided (sic) in Genessee County, N.Y., September 14, 1840 (age 6 [66?]).Erasmus moved to Stockbridge, Ingham County, Michigan where he died Dec. 16, 1860 (age 91)."I cannot certify the accuracy of the foregoing, but it appears valid.
Her children appear to have been Harvey, b. 1801-1806, d. 22 Mar 1874 to 15 Jun 1881, Horace, Harry, James, and Josiah b. 27 Jun 1791, probably in Austerlitz, Columbia Co., NY, d. 08 Aug 1824 in Genessee Co., NY, buried Pine Hill Cemetery. There is a great deal of uncertainty in this listing, and much additional research is needed.
