Gloria, I've been life-long friends of White and Mulatto (Labeled Colored/Black) CALCOTEs aroundBrookhaven, MS (Lincoln County and Franklin County). Common knownledge is that non-White CALCOTEs were descendants of White slaveholder CALCOTEs. A White CALCOTE farmer was our next door neighbor during my childhood and teenage years. The CALCOTEs were the fairest people I knew. They were good neighbors, fair employers, trusty consultants, honest business/investment partners... A "Black" CALCOTE family owned the largest non-White owned farm about a mile away. I surmise CALCOTE slaveholders gave or sold their slave descendants large land parcels that provided economic advantages during post-slavery years.
Recent Revelation: I'm a Hercules CALCOTE descendant!
