Sorry but this is kind of long!
My grandmother was Eva Calderwood McManus, daughter of John Alfred (Alford) Calderwood and Susan Marie Campbell.Eva was born 24 Mar 1883 in Macomb, McDonough, Illinois. Her brother Howard was born, we believe, 27 Oct 1884 near Brookfield, Chairton, Missouri.
John A. Calderwood and Susan Campbell were married 16 Dec 1880 in Macomb, McDonough Illinois. The marriage license shows John as a mechanic 36 years of age (b 2 Mar 1844) born in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania (New Castle). Parents names Henry Calderwood and Rebecca Cheneworth (Chenoweth), first marriage for both John and Susan.Witnesses to the marriage were Alex Calderwood and Lizzie Calderwood. I believe this is John’s brother and his wife (Elizabeth Carson).
A page from my grandmothers bible gives her fathers date and place of death as 21 Mar 1907 Rock Branch, Wayne Co, Illinois.
I also have a marriage license, dated 8 Nov 1866 in Camp Creek, McDonough Co, Illinois for Mason Calderwood to Eveline Shore. Descendants of Henry Mason Calderwood, a brother of John, say this is his marriage, even though it just has his middle name. This document does not provide dates or places of birth, nor parents names. But there is a note attached, signed by Evelines mother Emily Shore, giving her permission for the marriage of her daughter.
We know that Susan Campbell Calderwood died, of appendicitis, on a trip the family took “out west”.
The Nebraska 1890-91 farmer’s list shows John A. Calderwood, James H. Calderwood, D. D. Cameron, and Norman Clapp, all of Hull, Banner Co, Nebraska. The latter believed to be father or uncle of Mary A. Clappand her sister Caroline Clapp.
Gene Pool records and the book “The Chenoweths of Am…” show James wife as Caroline Clapp and John and James’ sister Nannie (or Annie) Calderwood as wife to D.D. Cameron. (This is Delbert D. Cameron, later of PA). These same records also show John A as married to Mary Board but we don’t think Mary was married before (see below.)
John A. Calderwood remarried 11 Jan 1893 to Mary M. Clapp, in Nebraska. This family of John, Mary, Eva, Howard, and John and Mary’s 1 year old child Guy (Floyd G) are recorded in the Special Census of the city of Clinton, Henry County Missouri in 1895. I have pictures taken in Clinton of Eva, Howard, and Guy. We know John took Eva back to Illinois to live with her mother’s sister Annie Campbell Frost. Eva married 25 Sep 1903 in Cisne, Wayne, Illinois to my grandfather, Daniel Lorin McManus. She kept some contact by mail with her brother Howard and visited her half brother Guy in Nebraska years later.
The obituary of Mary M. Calderwood, b Mary M. Clapp 7 Oct 1851 at Palentine, Illinois states she came to Nebraska in 1890, removing to Illinois in 1905, and following her husband’s death, returned to Gering, Nebraska in 1908. The obit I have is not dated but from the other information given we estimate is was about 1930. It also provides surviving family members: son Floyd G, city clerk of Gering, brother Jones M. Clapp of San Bernardino, CA; and sister Mrs. Linna Calderwood of Wheatland (Nebraska). It also mentions “several grandchildren and other relatives. I have made contact with Guy’s son and daughers.
From this and other information, John moved around quite a bit:
1844 Pennsylvania (birth)
1880 Pennsylvania? (census has John and Susan but they weren’t married until Dec)
1880 Illinois (John and Susan married) (Alex and Lizzie Calderwood here also)
1883 Illinois (Eva born)
1884 Missouri (Howard born (in process of getting birth record))
1890 Nebraska (farmers list) (also has James H. Calderwood and D.D. Cameron, husband of sister Nannie(Annie) C.
1893 Nebraska (John and Mary married)
1895 Missouri(city census and pictures)
1903 Illinois? (Eva married, don’t know if her father was there)
1907 Illinois (John passed away)
I also have several pictures of John A. Calderwood in New Castle PA with his brothers; and a New Castle, PA picture of a woman but we don’t know who she is.
Willing to exchange information. Thanks for reading this rather long post!
