Susie, I'm sure you're right about there being two Vardeman Calfees of the same age in Missouri at the same time. The Tennessee born Vardeman married Elizabeth Claybrook and resided in Morrow, Adair County, MO whereas the Missouri born Vardeman married Sarah Rogers and resided in the Cole Camp, Benton, MO area. The latter Vardeman had a son James W. Calfee in 1859, who in turn had a son Joseph in 1914-15. I suspect this is Joseph McCord Calfee born 1914, the father of James Daniel Calfee. My "wild"guess is that they could be first cousins whose fathers were brothers, one living in Tennessee and the other brother living in Missouri. It wasn't unusual in those days for brothers to choose the same first name for a son, when some other brother already had a son by that name. That's one of the challenges we wrestle with all the time. The BIG question is were do we connect each of these Vardeman's. I have a feeling, based on age, birth place and name similarities, that the Tennessee Vardeman goes to James and Charity Calfee in Cocke Co., TN. In a bigger stretch, my gut feel is that James' brother Benjamin may have gone to Missouri as a Benjamin Calfee did get a Land Patent in Camden,Morgan Missouri in 1845. Vardeman obtained land in near by Benton County in 1853 and Morgan Calfee obtained land in Camden, Morgan, MO in 1854. Facts or ideas, from anyone, would be appreciated.
