I am new to this site, but as a descendant of the CALLOW’s of London's East End, would love to hear from anybody who might be a relative, or have any information to help me go further back with my ancestry. The following is all the information I have uncovered to date, in brief: -
My grandmother was Dorothy Agnes COOK nee CALLOW, born 1910 in Hackney, E. London. Her siblings were Emma (b. 1896 in Ireland), Robert Joseph Patrick (b. & d. 1900), Sarah Elizabeth (b. 1898), Winifred Kathleen (b.1903) and Mary Ethel (b. 1907/8).
My great grandfather (Dorothy’s Agnes’ father) was Robert Joseph CALLOW, born 1871 in Hollywell, Shoreditch, E. London. He served in the British army 1889-1902, having been recalled from the Army reserve in 1899 to serve in the Boer War (1899-1902). During his army service he also served in Ireland, where he met and married Bridget O’DONNELL in 1894. His known siblings were Emma Mary Ann (b. 1874), Henry G. (b. c.1875), Sarah E. (b. c.1877), Mary Ann (b. c.1880), Elizabeth (b. c.1882) and James (b. c.1889).
My 2 x great grandparents (Robert Joseph’s parents) were Robert and Emma CALLOW, nee BLADES, who were married in July 1871. Robert was born in London circa 1851, but I have yet to track his birth certificate – on the 1901 census he gives his birthplace as Shoreditch, but the only Robert fitting the bill in the GRO registers had his birth registered in Greenwich. I intend purchasing this certificate in the near future.
My 3 x great grandfather (Robert’s father) was also named Robert and is shown to be a Plumber on his son’s marriage certificate.
