Ref#97:
Matthew was in New Haven by 1637, move to Norwalk 1652 (then on to
Branford, Newark. . .)
Matthew's death occurred sometime prior to June 6, 1673. A deed bearing
that date is on record at Newark--from Samuel Camfield of Norwalk to the
overseers of his father's estate for his brothers Ebenezer and Matthew of
Newark.
At the time of his death in 1673 (will dated March 19, 1672, and proven
June 1673), his estate was valued at 324 pounds, 4 shillings and 3
pennies. His funeral charges were 128 pounds, 6 shillings. He was buried
in the Old Burying Ground on the westerly side of Broad Street in Newark.
In his book Norwalk (1896) the Rev. Charles M. Selleck notes that
"Camfield's Island, in the immediate vicinity of Half-Mile Island, and
separated from it by Camfield Creek, rightly bears the name of its
earliest proprietor, the only Norwalk settler who had the honor of being
a Connecticut charterer, and whose remains now, it is supposed, rest
beneath one of the public buildings in the city of Newark, N.J. The town
granted this island to Matthew Camfield soon after he came to Norwalk.
Its owner removed to New Jersey and made over his Norwalk property to his
son Samuel . . ."
The foregoing was on page 52; on page 286 Selleck observed that Matthew
"was rated a wealthy man, and is supposed to be buried where now stands
the Newark City Hall."
"History of Thomas Canfield and of Matthew Camfield with Their
Descendants in New Jersey" (1897) by Frederick A. Canfield should be a
good source.
Matthew and Sarah's children:
--Samuel, bapt. Oct. 19, 1645, at New Haven; d. Oct. 29, 1690,
Norwalk; m. Elizabeth Merwin (d/o Miles Merwin). Some descendants
claim that he married Elizabeth Willoughby, but only a "Sarah"
Willoughby can be found in the family designated.
--Sarah, bapt. May 24, 1647; b. New Haven; d. after 1688.
--Mary, d. after 1688.
--Ebenezer, b. 1649, New Haven; d. on or about Dec. 1, 1694; m.
Bathia Lindley/Linsley.
--Matthew, b. May 9, 1650, New Haven; d. 1705, Newark; m. Deborah
--------.
--Hannah, b. June 21, 1651, New Haven; d. between 1672 and 1688.
--Rachel, b. July 29, 1652; d. before 1672.
--Jonathan, b. 1658; d. Sept. 1688, "a single person."
--Ruth, b. about 1660; d. between 1672 And 1688; did not marry.
Newark was the last Puritan Colony, Puritanism's last effort.
