William Cammack, 1st, of Spotsylvania Co., Va.
It has been quite a while since I updated my FTM file on William Cammack, 1st, who died in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, in 1783, so there may be errors and/or omissions in what I am posting, but I hope it will be useful to some of you.I had a private request for some of this information, and decided to post it in case others were having problems straightening out these early Virginia Cammacks.
Please feel free to suggest corrections and additions to me.
Mary Gregg
Descendants of William Cammack, Sr.
Generation No. 1
1.William1 Cammack, Sr. was born about 1697 in Virginia, possibly in Richmond County, and died in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, where his will was signed February 3, 1783, and the executors; bond was made April 17, 1783.I have never found the name of his wife, and she probably predeceased him, since she isn't mentioned in his will.
William was the illegitimate son of Mary Cammack, daughter of Warwick Cammack and his wife, Margaret, whose maiden name is unknown. She (Margaret) was the widow of Sylvester Thatcher when she married Warwick Cammack.
Mary Cammack, mother of William, married in the late 1690s or early 1700s, Francis Stern, 1st, a man about the age of her own father.By him, she had two more sons, Francis Stern, Jr., and David Stern, 2nd.(Francis Stern, 1st, had a brother who was David Stern, 1st.)After the death of her husband, Francis Stern, in 1713, Mary (Cammack) (Stern) married as her second husband, Isaac Trocq or Truck. Both of them died in Caroline County, Isaac in 1739, and Mary in 1743.They had no children.
The first Item in William Cammack, Sr.'s will reads: << Item I give & bequeath to my son Francis Cammock one Shilling Stirling, to my son William Cammock the same, to my son John Cammock the same, to my daughter Margaret Buckner the same, to my daughter Catherine Colacon the same. >>
From Mary Gregg:It is proven that this testator's sons Francis and William were deceased
when William wrote this will, yet he bequeathed them each one shilling.I believe that the other
three children who are mentioned in the same Item of the will, and who each received one shilling
(John, Margaret and Catherine) also had predeceased their father, and that he mentioned all of
them in this will, (even though with the smallest possible bequest), to prevent anyone descended
from them, or claiming to be descended from them, from making a claim against his estate on the
grounds that he had "forgotten" to include them.
More from Mary Gregg:I have never found anyone named Colacon or anything similar to it in this area of Virginia, but I have seen James Colquhond and James Colquohoon.Perhaps James Colquohoon was Catherine Cammack's husband.

19 i. John3 Cammack, Revolutionary War Soldier, died March 10, 1835.He married Nancy Miller between 1756 and 1757 in Caroline County, Virginia. She was born about 1740.
Notes for John Cammack, Revolutionary War Soldier, sent to Mary Gregg by Mrs.
Louise (Cammack) Davis in 1972:
Mrs. Davis wrote, ". . .Nancy Miller Cammack applied for her husband's pension and was turned down until finally learned that John was filed as John McCammack, not Cammack. When this was straightened out she recd. pension..."Warwick Cammack and family did not, in any of their records, use prefix Mc nor were Quakers..."
According to the Revolutionary War pension application of Nancy (Miller) Cammack, widow of John Cammack, this couple had seven children who were living in 1839 when Nancy applied for the pension. Mrs. Davis said that they probably were also parents of the following Henry Cammack.
Henry Cammack married Molly Ellis in Fauquier County, Virginia. Her father, John Ellis, gave his consent dated May 24, 1790. They were married by John Pickett.Mrs. Davis said they had a daughter, Hannah, born in Virginia.
"On 9th day of Aug. 1802, Henry Cammack sold livestock, household goods, etc. including his old hat and left Fauquier Co., Va. He appeared in Mercer Co., Ky. 1815 Tax Lists. 7 Ellises also listed 1817-1818-1819. Henry no longer appears in either Mercer or Washington counties between 1819-1824. Presumably he died.

"Journal of the Virginia House of Delegates."Mr. Reyes gave this information to
Mrs. Louise (Cammack) Davis, who passed it on to me (Mary Gregg).
At a General Assembly begun and holden at the Capitol in the City of Williamsburg, on Monday the 20th day of October 1777.
Friday, November 28, 1777.
A petition of Henry Cammack was presented to the House and read; setting forth that he cheerfully entered as a soldier into the Service of the State, and still continues therein; that when on duty some short time past, his gun accidentally fired and discharged the load through his right hand, by which he is rendered not only unfit for Service, but unable to get a livelihood by labor, and praying relief.Ordered that the said petition be referred to the Committee of Public Claims; and that they do examine the matter thereof and report to same, with their opinion thereupon, to the House.
The above soldier was listed as being from Spotsylvania County.GWR
23 v. Catherine Cammack, born about 1759,.She married Charles Burrage(Burge) November 20, 1778, in Spotsylvania County. He was born about 1748, and died July 28, 1820, in Spotsylvania County.

Children of George Cammack and Catharine Durrett were:
25 i. Catherine3 Cammack, married Wilson Davis April 1, 1821, in Spotsylvania County.
26 ii. Mary Cammack, died after October 1836 in Christian County, Kentucky. She married Henry Durrett, before March 25, 1799.He was born about 1770, and died between 1825 and 1836 in Christian County, Kentucky.
Notes for Henry Durrett:
According to The Durrett Family in THE VIRGINIA GENEALOGIST(1970 or 1871), Henry Durrett married a girl named Mary (Cammack?), and the will of George Cammack,1st, mentions his daughter Mary Durrett, so it probably is correct, but is not proven, that Henry Durrett married Mary Cammack.
27 iii. Nancy Cammack married Woodson Durrett March 2, 1802. in Spotsylvania County. He died in July 1825 in Mason County, Kentucky.
28 iv. Robert Cammack, born April 17, 1773, in Virginia,,,,; died August 18, 1853.He married Elizabeth Chew February 6, 1800; born October 5, 1779,,; died January 12, 1838 in "Cold Hill" Spotsylvania County, Virginia,,.
Robert, son of George Cammack, inherited his Grandfather Cammack's land. Many of his descendants migrated to New Orleans, Louisiana.

29 v. George Cammack II, born about 1781 in Virginia,; died between 1850 and 1860.I base this statement on the fact that he was on the 1850 census of Christian County, Kentucky, with his wife, Joana, and some children, presumably his, Thos. H., Mary E. C.(?), Anna E. J., and Viola. In 1860, Joana Cammack is head of a household in Ballard County, Kentucky, and with her are teenaged girls, Mary and Ann, so it seems reasonable to think that this Ballard County household consists of George Cammack's widow, Joanna, and two of his daughters.
Joana (also seen as Joanna) Thomas was his second wife. His first wife was Martha McKay, whom he marriedFebruary 27, 1816, in Mason County, Kentucky. He married Joanna Thomas January 13, 1833, in Christian County, Kentucky..She was born about 1801 in Kentucky, and died in July 1859 in Washington County, Illinois.

Joseph Brock, Edward Herndon, Thomas Colston, Joseph Herndon & William Smith or any three of them are appointed to allot to Mary Cammock her Dower in the Estate of William Cammock deced. in Spotsylvania County & report to Court
From Mary Gregg: The William Cammack who was appointed guardian of George, William, Robert, John and Christopher, was William Cammack, 1st, of Spotsylvania County, who was their grandfather. It seems probable that these five were the children of Agatha Dudley, and that Mary, the widow, was the mother of Richard Roy Cammack and Jane Beverley Cammack.
Children of William Cammack and Agatha Dudley were:
35 i. George3 Cammack, born March 31, 1762, in Caroline County, Virginia,; died August 19, 1820, in Natchez, Adams County, Mississippi. He married Mary ("Polly") Stern about 1786 in Caroline County, Virginia. She born 1769 in Caroline County, Virginia; died September 28, 1828 in Natchez, Adams County, Mississippi, and was the daughter of Peyton Stern and Elizabeth Woolfolk.George and Polly were half-second cousins, both being descended from Mary Cammack.
Notes for George Cammack:
George Cammack was 12 years old when his father died; he was made a ward of his grandfather, William Cammack,, Sr., who lived in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, and there is considerable evidence that George actually did go to live there. In that county, in 1779, George Cammack aged 15 and William Cammack aged 13 bound themselves as apprentices to Benjamin Waller, millwright, and in 1782 in the same county, Harry Bartlett and Benjamin Waller were bonded prior to the settlement of the account of "George Cammack, orphan of William Cammack."He also appears from time to time in the Court records of Caroline County.
--------
Among the records that prove George's Revolutionary War service is the "Chesterfield Court House List of 1780" on which list George Cammack is described as being 18 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches in height, a planter born in Caroline County, Virginia, but a resident of Spotsylvania County.

CHAPTER IV
The first permanent bridge was completed about 1816. Residents of Franklin County could walk across free, and paid 10¢ for driving a vehicle drawn by one horse, but those living outside the county were charged 10¢ for walking across and 25¢ for driving. This charge was so much higher than that of the ferries that new ferries immediately were started.
Bridges and ferries meant nothing to one Christopher Cammack. He is mentioned in the early records as "Old Kit Cammack who waded the river with a kettle on his head." Mr. George Lewis explained in detail. -Kit Cammack," who was a great (Louise left out a word here) would turn an iron pot over his head and walk on the bottom of the river, the pot serving to hold him under the water and to retain the air about his nose and mouth for a time. But in attempting the feat once too often he was drowned." (Kentucky River)
(Nothing more about Christopher in Mrs. Darnell's book)
