Rulon, I spent a good deal of time tracing the Candlers who went to TN. I think I have a useful clue (or two) for you. John Candler's brother, Zacharia married a girl from SC around 1800 and settled in Buncombe Co, NC. So... I found it likely that Zacharia and John may have been in SC for a time and met and married their SC brides. I believe that Ruth Harbin (Martha's sister) was not born in the same state as she - one of them (I can't recall now) was born in SC and the other in GA. When Anna Moorman Candler's estate was settled in VA, there are notations that son Zacharia lived in Buncombe, and son John lived in Smith (or Wilson) County, TN. Apparently, John and Martha had no surving children since his will left all to her, and she left all to her sister. Zedekiah Candler, the father, moved to Smith County and was on the 1820 census. The records, such as they are, are scattered between Smith and Wilson, and so I assume they lived and had land at the junction of these counties.
