This info takes in Isaac's son, Elijah. I am descended from Isaac's son Abraham.
ISAAC CANTRELL, SR. and TALITHA CLOUD
Isaac Cantrell, Sr., son of Joseph and Catherina __ Cantrill, m. 1st, about 1750, Rockingham Co., NC to Talitha Cloud, b. Sep 1729, New Castle Co., PA (now DE), a great-granddaughter of William Cloud who came from the County of Wilts, England with his family in 1682 and purchased 500 acres of land from William Penn and settled in what is now the town of Concord, Delaware Co., PA, just across the state line from New Castle Co.
Isaac became an ordained minister of the Baptist Church, probably through association with the Welsh Tract of PA (later DE). He was the first recorded minister in this Cantrell family in America, following in the Christian footsteps of members of the family in England.
It is not known what year Isaac moved his family down through the Shenandoah Valley, across the Blue Ridge Mountains and across the Dan River to the “Land of Eden” or Promised Land, in Orange Co., NC. One writer has listed the year of 1764.We know that he was not there in 1755 from the Tax list of that year. From the land records, we find he acquired land in 1758. This land was on Wolf Island Creek and adjoined the land of his brother John on the southeast. We find him first mentioned in the Minutes of Quarter Court, Orange County, when he, along with others, were called and sworn for Grand Jury duty in August, 1764. He owned considerable land along Wolf Island Creek, in the present county of Rockingham. This was to the west of the present town of Reidsville, NC where descendants were still living in 1980. The records of the Baptist Church in NC record that he was an itinerant minister serving the Baptist Church at Matrimony Creek, NC, near the present town of Eden, NC. There are also records of his administering the rites of marriage to individuals who lived in the Wolf Island Creek area as late as 1788.
Isaac’s first wife Talitha died before 1772, leaving several children.
At least one son and the widow of another remained in NC. The children listed below are from those compiled by the family genealogists, from records in Rockingham Co., NC and from records of deeds, settlements of estates, etc. in Spartanburg Co., SC. Gaps between the birth years of some of the offspring would indicate the existence of other children, perhaps daughters.
Although some genealogists with better resources in this technological age may disagree, Warren Cantrell stated emphatically that Abraham was Isaac’s first son by Mary Linder.
Isaac’s will was contested by son Peter, and the court record shows Isaac had 19 children (naming them all), of whom Peter was representing in his contest of the will.

MARY CANTRELL and SAMPSON BETHEL
Mary Cantrell, daughter of Isaac and Talitha Cloud Cantrell, m. Aug 24, 1773, Guilford Co., NC, to Sampson Bethel, born in VA, son of William and Constance Sampson Bethel.Mary met Sampson who was about her age when the family moved southward. Sampson’s ancestor, James Bethel, came to America in 1635 on the same ship Safety that brought Mary’s ancestor, Thomas Heath, to America.
A few years later, Mary and Sampson moved southward to the 96th District, later Spartanburg Co., SC. In 1790, they were the parents of five children. They were members of the Buck Creek Baptist Church and Sampson was listed as a messenger to the Association in 1792. They lived near John “Miller John” Cantrell who had married Mary’s sister, Elizabeth. On Feb 3, 1792, Mary Bethel signed as witnessing a deed of land between Elijah Green and Abraham Cantrell. On Feb 14, 1792, Sampson Bethel signed as witnessing a deed between John Cobb and James Cantrell, his brother-in-law. They evidently moved westward to TN by 1800, since they were not listed in the census of that year.
From Hale’s history of DeKalb Co., TN, we find that one son, Rev. Cantrell Bethel, who lived in Liberty, TN, established a church at Brush Creek, May 2, 1802. He came with the colony that “marked the establishing of the first town in Tennessee between Nashville and the Cumberland Mountains” and settled half a mile west of Liberty. The colony settled in the Sink Creek area and helped establish the Old Bildad Baptist Church and probably are buried in the church cemetery.

ISAAC CANTRELL, SR. and MARY LINDER
Isaac Cantrell, Sr., son of Joseph and Catherina __ Cantrill, m. 3rd about 1773 to Mary Linder, b. 1755, either a daughter or sister of John Linder who lived on the adjoining section of land.
In 1795, Isaac moved his family south down the Piedmont Plain to Spartanburg District, SC, where brother John had moved some years before. Isaac had surveys of land in 1798 and 1801 for 302 acres of land on a ridge near the Pacolet River. In 1801, he disposed of the last of his land in Rockingham Co., NC.
In the records of the Baptist Church in SC, we find he founded the Buck Creek Baptist Church in 1777 and served as minister, 1796-1799. It is interesting to note that in 1980 a great-great-great-great-grandson (Willie Aaron Cantrell, son of Dewey Ishmael and grandson of William McDaniel “Preacher Mack”) was serving the Baptist church in a continuous Cantrell line of ministers spanning a period of over 200 years. Beginning with Isaac, there has been a Baptist minister in every generation, even to this day. Willie is the 7th generation. William Lynn “Bill” Cantrell, second cousin of Willie, has a son, Tim, who is an ordained Regular Baptist minister, making him the 8th generation. Bill’s brother, Newton, has son, Randall, who when he’s ordained will also be the 8th.
In the census of 1800, Isaac and his family were recorded on page 176. He owned four slaves at that time. He prepared his will Aug 23, 1805. The inventory of his estate was dated Feb 10, 1806. His place of burial is probably at the Buck Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Will of Isaac Cantrell
I give and bequeath unto my loving wife, Mary Cantrell, all my real and personal estate, during the time of her natural life, or widowhood, except the money that is now in my hands.
I will that it be equally divided amongst all my children, except my son Elijah Cantrell’s heirs; to the two children he left at his decease, I will that they have of my estate ten shillings between them.
I also except George Pirtle, and my grandson, Isaac Pirtle, George Pirtle’s son.I give and bequeath to George Pirtle five shillings and to my grandson, Isaac Pirtle, five shillings.
I also give and bequeath to my son Enoch Cantrell and his heirs, after the decease of my wife, one negro boy named Watt.
I also give to my son Lanceford one negro named Sam.
I also give to my son Abraham one negro woman, Poll, except her increase.
I also give to my son Caleb, the child the wench now has named Will, if he dies before he is ten years old, then to have the next living child and the other increase left to the disposal of my wife; if no living children, the wench to be equally divided between Abraham and Caleb, at the decease of my wife.
I will that my wife give the children that are now under her care, when they leave her what she thinks necessary, and also will that she give Nimrod such necessaries as the rest had, when she thinks good.
George Pirtle(Signed) Isaac Cantrell
It should be noted that not all of the children of Isaac were listed in the will. The settlement of the estate listed other children. Fifty years later, son Abraham was still concerned about his inheritance. One son, Peter, filed a protest to the will in 1806. Isaac’s estate was considerable for that time period. At least some of the children of Isaac appear to have received a certain amount of education. Several wills and deeds located in the course of research of this branch of the family were legibly signed, whereas many others bore only the traditional mark (X).
In 1810, Mary and one son, age 16-25, probably Mark, were recorded in Spartanburg Co., SC. There were seven slaves listed. In 1820, Mark was married and his household included an over-45 female who was probably Mary.
In 1830, the household of Lanceford included a 70-80 year old female who was probably Mary also.
In 1830 also, Mary disposed of other property as directed by Isaac’s will, as follows:
State of South Carolina, Spartanburg District, know by all men by this presents that I Mary Cantrell of the District and State aforesaid for & every consideration of the natural love and affection which I have & bear toward my children, Nimrod Cantrell, Mark Cantrell, Caleb Cantrell, Abram Cantrell, Lanceford Cantrell, Enoch Cantrell and my grandson Isaac Pirtle and also in conformity to the will of my dead husband, Isaac Cantrell, I have granted, bargained, sold and given and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell & give unto my said children & grandchildren above named all & singular the following property to wit: 200 acres of land situated in said District on Pacolet, whereon I now live and also one negro boy named Terry, one wagon --- head of sheep and all my stock --- rifle --- harness, one broken set of smith tools, ten hogs with their increase, all my household and kitchen furniture, farming tools & all of every other special -- of property now in my possession or which may be in my possession at the time of my decease, except one small mare to be equally divided among my children and grandson, share and share alike and to have, hold & enjoy and every part thereof unto them their heirs of assigns forever & forever understood and it is to be considered a condition in the --- that all and singular the property real and personal before man means in my possession for my use & enjoyment and entirely at my disposal so long as I shall live and at my death this deed is to be into effect and my said children & grandson are then to receive the full benefits of the provision thereof in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 16 day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and 30 and in the fifty fourth year of American Independence.Signed and Sealed & delivered in the presence to wit.
Witnesses: William Toumer and A. Vernon
In 1840, the household of son Lanceford had a female, age 80-90, listed; this was most likely Mary. She died in 1854 (one source states 1844) in Spartanburg Co., SC and was probably buried in the Buck Creek Baptist Church Cemetery where there are hundreds of field-stone-marked graves.
