My Great-grandfather emigrated from Clonakilty, Cork to Massachusetts in 1885. I moved to South Carolina in 1963. Soon after I read in the legislative biographies of an Assemblyman named Cantey from All Saints Parish in the 1690's. He was one of two brothers on the first ship in 1670. They brought their father, Teague, from Barbados the following year. Teague had emigrated to Barbados from Cork around 1650. Although many Irish on Barbados were, as a practical matter, slaves they seem to have had a higher station in life as they were given land grants in Carolina. The Cantey plantation on the Ashley is now part of Charleston Air Force Base. Barbados was contemporaneously colonizing Guyana, Jamaica and Virginia. The history of Ireland 1640-1650, Barbados 1650-1670 and South Carolina 1670-1700 is fascinating.
