William Capener was born in London, England in 1806 and was married in 1828 to Sarah Verrander, also a native of London. In 1834, the couple emigrated to America and after they became members of the LDS Church, moved to Utah in 1852. After 21 years in Salt Lake City, William moved his family to Centerville, where they purchased the lot from Thomas Whitaker and built their home.
William Capener was a builder, carpenter and cabinetmaker by trade until his death in 1884. The house remained in the Capener family until 1910
