Hello, I don't have much to contribute in the way of geneaology, but am inquiring as to the origin & meaning of my surname. If any one can help, I would be appreciated. Possibly I am a distant relative of the Caples family of Maryland as I noticed there was a John F., a son of a Robert Francis Caples (?). The only information I could contribute is that I am (as far as I know), the third straight John Francis Caples (after my father and his father; b.1931 and b.approx. 1900-1950s [with brothers William and Philip (sp.?)], respectively). There is a geneaolgy circulating in the family that was done in Preland, I believe, which had the Caples family marrying into the English family and which purported the origin of the family to be descendants of Hugenots, which I highly question. I know from my limited research that the name is said to be of both English and Irish origin (a book on surnames of Ireland listed Caples as the Cork variant of Caplis or Caplis, and an Irish knicknack store had a computer which had crests which listed the name as being English). Also, I have determined the name means either "chapel", designating those who lived around or served clergy (English), or "capel", German for nag. Any help or insight is appreciated, and I would be glad to help anyone if I can.
