Jennifer, I’ve done a little digging for you on Ancestry.com & come up with this:
Ohio Deaths, 1908-1944 and 1958-2002 Name: Alton Caplinger Birth Date: Est. 1908 Death Date: 6 Nov 1972 City of Death: Chillicothe County of Death: Ross
Social Security Death Index Name: Alton Caplinger SSN: 272-12-1649 Born: 12 Jun 1908 Died: Nov 1972 Last Residence: 45133 Hillsboro, Highland, Ohio
Several family Trees (11) with the following name & dates have been submitted (unfortunately, with no ancestors shown): William Alton Caplinger Born: 12 Jun 1908 Died: 6 Nov 1972, Highland, Ohio
1910 census, Scott, Adams Co., Ohio William A. Caplinger, age 1 10/12, born about 1908 Parents are: James B. (born abt. 1877) & Maggie M. Caplinger

1900 census, Bratton, Adams Co., Ohio James B. Caplinger, age 23, born about 1877 Parents are: Jacob (born abt. 1840) & Ellen Caplinger
If you think that this William Alton Caplinger is your ancestor, you can probably send for his death certificate & application for social security card to verify that James B. & Maggie Caplinger where his parents.
If all the above is true, then you are descended from Jacob & Ellen Stern-Caplinger. Jacob was the son of George W. & Jemima Shoemaker-Caplinger. George W. was the son of William & Magdalena M. Caplinger (a marriage between 1st cousins). William (who married Magdalena M. Caplinger) was the “brother” of Dr. John Caplinger.
Leonhard Johan Caplinger was the family patriarch in America: SPELLING FROM SHIP LIST: Leonhart Kopplinger AND Johannes Kepplinger (Johannes would have been about 17 yrs old) arrived at port Philadelphia aboard the ship: Thistle of Glasgow from Palatinate Germany, 29 Aug 1730.Ships master: Colin Dunlap from Rotterdam (last from Cowes)
