The fourth week of February 1921 in the town of Bitonto, Italy Paolo Cariello (27), Chiara Barile (20) and Martia Patierno (45) left for a journey to the New World. They traveled from Bitonto to the port city of Campania near Naples. In Naples on February 28th 1921 they boarded a ship called the Argentina owned by Cosulich Line a ship sailing under the Italian flag since 1919. They traveled for 17 or 18 days until they arrived in New York at Ellis Island.
Upon arrival Chiara Barile and Martia Paterno were signed in by Rosa Barile of the Bronx New York. Paolo Cariello was sign in by Dominick Grassini of New Brunswick New Jersey. Left behind in Italy were the parents of Paolo Cariello and brother Carlo Cariello at the address 19 via Maggiore in the town of Bitondo. Also, left behind in the country of origin was Aunt Angela (Chiara’s Aunt) at the address of Via Torre di Serno, Mariotto a small town near Bari. Great Grandmother Martha Paterno leaving behind sister Rosa of Bitondo.
On the 1st of April 1923 Clara (Chiara) Barile and Paolo (Paolo Cariello) Cariello became Mr. & Mrs. Paolo Cariello the parish of Parrocchia Italiana della Madonna di Pompei on 210-214 Bleecker Street, New York.
On March 5th 1934 Clara (Chiara) Cariello became an American citizen in the district court of New York. On December 10th 1934 Paolo Cariello became and American citizen at the district court at 320 East 31st Street New York.
On September 22, 1926 John J. Cariello was born in the Bronx New York. In 1944 John J. Cariello entered the merchant Marine and in 1945 enters the army during WWII and went to Korea during the Korean occupation.
In 1956 John J. Cariello son of Clara and Paolo Cariello marries Angela F. Consoli, Angela a daughter of the Grace and Francesco Consoli and move to Oceanside, New York. On March 2 1957 they have a son Paul J. Cariello (presentily in Oceanside). On March 8th 1958 they have another son John F. Cariello (Presently in Massapequa).
In the year 2002, after more than 80 years since the first Cariello’s migrated to the United States, John F. Cariello receives news that Carlo Cariello the brother of Paolo Cariello has a son Vinchenze Cariello in Bitonto Italy. Vinchenze has two daughters Carmen and Luciana Cariello(Bufano).
John F. Cariello married Kathleen Cariello (Fry) and has two children Michael John Cariello and Jean Marie Cariello and resides in Massapequa New York.
Notes to Update: Some errors have been found in the Ellis Island Paperwork. The Ellis Island foundation has the name Cariello changed to Carelli and Paolo change to Pablo. These have been found to be in error.
