Janice -If Persis was born in Columbia Co. NY in/abt 1760, I think she would have had to have been the daughter of Abraham and Susannah Brookins Carley. There are not many children acknowledged as belonging to this couple, but more are slowly being discovered, especially those who had been Royalists and who had sought haven in Canada during the War.I believe that Abraham and Susannah Brookins were the only Carleys living in Columbia Co. at that point in time, so it would be a pretty safe conclusion for us to make.
Further, Abraham, so William and Mary Bowden Carley, had an older brother John who was m in 1731 to Sarah Meeker Sherwood, do David and Sarah Meeker Sherwood of Fairfield, CT.Abraham and Susannah B. are said to have had at least 3 children b. in Fairfield in the mid to late 1740s and the eldest, daughter Mary m Ebenezer Mallory there in 1767. Susannah's sister-in-law, Hannah Keyes, also married into the Mallory family, so you can see that they had strong ties to the families of CT.
To complicate matters, it seems that John and Sarah also had a son named Abraham who also married a woman named Susannah. Her last name is not known but after the younger Abraham died, she was shorlty remarried to Thaddeus Gray in Feb, 1759.Thaddeus was a son of Sarah's aunt, Elizabeth Meeker, who had married William Gray. The younger Abraham and Susannah had at least 5 children - 3 recognized by Donald Lines Jacobus in his history of Fairfield - and I would also attribute at least 2 others b in Wilton in the 1750s, prior to his death. However, since Persis was born after 1760, I would have to put her into that elder couple's family.
The younger Abraham's parents, John and Sarah Carley were known to be in the Oblong of what was then Dutchess Co.- now Putnam Co. - according to Sarah's father David's Will processed in the early 1760's, and several Carley/Kerleys served in the Dutchess Co. Vol Militia during the Rev War afterwhich, many settled in the Albany area.
The elder Abraham and his wife Susannah Brookins were also in and out of VT during that period. He served with Ethan Allen in the Green Mountain Boys - and her Brookins nephews, perhaps even brothers, had settled in VT fairly early on.
Their son Joel appears to have married twice. The first marriage to Prudence resulted in the birth of a daughter Annis, who was baptised in Nobletown in 1787.I see a Meeker family was also in residence there around that time, possibly Prudence was a Meeker. He remarried Mercy Bouton after 1787, a second marriage for both of them and he would certainly have been a contemporary of your Persis.
I'm sure I have only muddied the waters for you - I have been studying this family for so long and with so much frustration that I feel like I'm not sure of much of anything anymore.
If you feel like you can trust me after that confession and that I can add anything more - please let me know - Judy
