Carlaws from Stirling, Scotland
I am researching the Carlaw from from Stirlingshire, Scotland. My research has taken me to James and Mary (Arthur) Carlaw who married 14 Jan 1809 in Polmont, Stirlingshire, Scotland. They had three children. Two daughters and one son.Their son James was born in 1809 and he marries Isabella Bain 29 Apr 1834 in Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland. They have 6 children, five of whom are born in Scotland and travel to Canada with their parents before number 6 is born here. They are James Henry, Elizabeth, Thomas Bain, John Anderson, Davidson and Mary Eliza.
It is told that James (b 1809) was a manager of a large Scotch syndicate that was sent to Canada in 1853 by Earl Grey and Sir Henry Jackson in connection with the construction of the Quebec division of the Grand Trunk Railway.Sometime before 1856 he completed that task and moved to Percy Township in Northumberland County in Ontario where he and some of his sons (James, Thomas and Davidson) took up farming.
I am looking for any information regarding this syndicate, who might have been in it with him, etc.I cannot locate the family travelling to Canada in 1853 and suspect that they would have travelled with some others from this syndicate.Anyone knowing how to research this syndicate that could share info with me would be very helpful.
One son, John Anderson Carlaw, became a cashier for the GTR and went to Toronto where much is written about him.
By 1920, Davidson Carlaw, was operating a mill in Belleville, Ontario - the Carlaw Milling Co.I know that it burned down but I have been unable to find any information about it.
Thomas became a warden of Northumberland-Durham county.
The family were staunch Presbyterians.
Anyone with information regarding this family are invited to respond.Thank you.
