Three KERNS males are listed in the 1790 Stokes Co., NC census: Hubbard, James, & William; and also listed are Josias and William CALLAHAN.
Josias married Elizabeth CARNES.Hubbard m: Marianne CALLAHAN.And both are found in Greenville Co., SC by 1800, living in the same area - Mtn. Creek of the N. Saluda and Enoree Rivers.I perceive this to be in the mountains, perhaps near CALLAHAN Creek.(I know it is NOT the Mtn Creek in the south - Dunklin District as my BURTONS are from there.)
All of these families ended up in Rabun Co., GA, including Roseanna CARNES, "widow of Rev. War Soldier", receiving land in the Cherokee land lottery of 1832 in what became Walker Co., GA.Indications are that Joseph Henry & Hubbard P. CARNES were Roseanna's grandsons - obtaining land in the same county a few years later.Yes, to date, I am assuming Roseanna is widow of James CARNES - either the James KERNS in 1790 Stokes Co., NC or the James KERN in Spartanburg, SC 1790.I have NOT checked dates of census.Perhaps the two are one.
Hope this helps someone clarify.
Gerre Byrd a direct descendant of both Josias CALLAHAN & Hubbard CARNES
