Dear Daniela, thank you very much for your nice message.I shall try to help you with your SHORASHIM=RootS project which is very important for you personally and all Jewish children in the Diaspora. 1)The Family worldwide is split into Sephardi and Ashkenasi Caro-S. Over the 20 years of my evening-hour research I have discovered relatively few Sephardi Caro-s.There are fewer Sephardi genealogical documents and records, because of the danger of them being discovered by spies of the Spanish Inquisition which lasted for 500 years!.(Ask your teacher to explain to you about the Spanish Inquisition). Most of the Caro records I have in my 60 files are Ashkenasim. I am an Ashk.Caro descendant. It is only a fairly recent development forSephardim to marry Ashkenasim. In most cases the Ashkenasim lived in ghettos and were very poor until the Indusrial Revolution in Europe in the 18th & 19th cent.
You have not told me if you are Sephardi or Ashkenasi. You asked me to tell you about Seph.customs.From that I gather that you are an Ashkenasi Caro.If you ask your parents, they can tell you where they and your grandparents were born,so I can try and look in my files for Caro-s who came from the same part of the world or even the same country. Most of the Seph.Caro descendants I have on record are from Morocco,Tunisia and Turkey. They used to speak Ladino which is a mixture of Hebrew and Spanish. They have beautiful songs in this language, which helped to keep Ladino and Sephardi traditions alive. You can try to contact the Dr.Randal BELIFANTE,Librarian and Archivist of the American Sephardi Federation.
I have a summary of my 1991 talk in Hebrew, translated into Portugese. If this can help you,I can FAX it to you, if you give me a fax number. GOOD LUCK with your Shorashim and SHALOM Chava Agmon
