I am looking for information on John CROTHERS/CAROTHERS who lived in Orange Co., NY in the mid 1700's. Any help would be appreciated. Here is my family line:
The John CAROTHERS I familyarrived inAmerica in the mid 1700's, but I don't know the exact date... They were suppose to have come in the ship Half-Moon and settled first in Orange County, NY... However I have never been able to verify a ship by that name or any record of this family in Orange County.
John CAROTHER'S I (?- 1798) first wife (name unknown) died shortly after they arrived in this country...He then married Betsy BAITY and they had nine or ten children...This family moved to Phelps, Ontario County, NY ...The Carothers children: Robert, John II, Isabella, Jane, Betsy, Sarah, James, Henry, William, and Nancy... They spelled their name CAROTHERS, CROTHERS, and CARRUTHERS at different times.
The second son of Betsy (BAITY)and John CAROTHERS I was John CAROTHERS II (1775-1842).. He married Betsey SICKLES (1779-1853) in ca1797 and they had eight children...This family moved to Burton, Geauga, OH sometime after 1882... This family farmed there and raised their children: William B., Henry Pickney, Madison, John III, Clarissa, Delaney, Delora, and Marie Jane...Both Betsey (SICKLES) and John CAROTHERS II died Burton, Geauga County, OH and are buried in Pleasent Hill Cemetery, Geauga County, OH
