Hugh Carruthers, Orange co, NC info
I am not a Carruthers researcher or descendent, but while looking at land records in Orange Co. for information on Hugh Rogers, I came across the following deed, which might be of interest to people researching Hugh Carruthers of old Orange Co.
Orange Co. DB2/p587 deed of sale from William and Susannah Carrothers to Thomas Thompson, 277a Harden's Creek of Cain C, n side of Haw River, to Thomas Thompson for 50 pds. Date is 19 Jan 1770, recorded Jan 1770
The deed further states "Granville to Hugh Carruthers 13 Aug 1759 'fell to the sd William Caruthers by the (blank) of his father the sd. Hugh Carruthers".
It is not clear to me exactly where this tract is, but Thomas Thompson (and numerous other Thompsons) had lands (and land problems) in the area of Hawfields which fell into the large territory claimed by Samuel Strudwick.
On 11 Aug 1788 (rec Aug 1788) Orange deed book 4 p14 Samuel Strudwick to Thomas Thompson for 500 pounds, 640a in the Hawfields, on Haw River, on Meadow Creek and Flush Branch. The deed indicates the land was formerly the land of Hugh Rogers.
I have a notation that there was a NC state grant to Hugh Rogers on 12 Aug 1778 joining Jo Woods and Samuel Thompson, and also a notation that Strudwick sued Rogers in Hillsborough Dist Sup Court in March, 1770 (perhaps one of these dates is wrong).Plaintiff called a failed to appear. Nonsuit.
The above (Rogers to Thompson)land fell into a "contested" territory in which a number of people had settled, obtained Granville grants (up to 1763)and later (after 1778) NC state grants, sometimes on land which they had been living on for years without being able to obtain a grant following the death of Granville in 1763.
Samuel Strudwick apparently had a valid prior claim to large tracts of Hawfields area lands and began eviction suits against some of these people, and resales of same lands sometimes to the prior "owner" and sometimes to others. This was not a happy circumstance, and many of these people just moved away, or off of the Strudwick territories, rather than pay Strudwick for land they thought they already owned. It appears that is what may have happened to the Hugh Rogers tract above, but it's not clear to me whether it adjoined the Carruthers tract or not, which may have been outside the Strudwick area.
I have no known connection to either of these families, but would love to know something of the history of these Carruthers and also Hugh Rogers as part of a general quest to learn more about Hawfields area families in my search for my elusive Moores, who lived nearby.
Hope this will be helpful to some of you looking for these people.
