hi shelly, since this message has been posted, i have came into alot of info on my carroll family through cousins.how the name tillman fits, i dont know. besides being my gg granddads name, it was also his fathers name-james tillman sr and also my g granddads name james william tillman and even he had a son that died in infancy named james tillman iv,but i still dont know where it comes from. according to the info i have i dont recall a mcclellan or christopher from north carolina. my gggg grandfather was samuel carroll from maryland, we presume, but cannot clarify.he supposedly moved into the va. area in the late 1700's to early 1800's. but stayed mainly in the lincoln co and cabell co (wv)area. there are connections somehow between tillmans and carrolls in the south carolina and maryland areas. i have ran across a christopher tilghman from 1638 in maryland on the genforum you might want to check that route or even search the south carolina area for your mcclellan, that name is used alot in familys in the carolinas. well good luck hunting for your piece of the pie.
