I think you have found your family.But please do hold onto your chair because I only started doing geneology research two weeks ago. I am not an expert. I think you belong to the John Carroll line arriving in Isle of Wight County Co., Virginia about 1665. Check your DNA 37marker test by FamilyTreeDNA on that line and see if it works. Lots of Thomas's in that line. As for Thomas Carroll of Duplin Co., NC,he fits your decription.He was young, probably illiterate, has no marriage filed here, nor is he buried here; so he I think he left. I will dig to see if I can find the results of his 1785 lawsuit.I am in a golf tournament today, but will be home tonight.Good luck, I hope the testing links.If it does, I have another surprise for you cousin.
