I am so glad to find that some people find my site helpful. I descend from both lines of Carrolls. Among the MOSS/STEWART/Carroll line, you will find a few of the Carrolls are (at least in part) Cherokee. One of my ancestors was called "Choga" Stuart/Stewart. Choga is a Cherokee word meaning "[Indian] Trader".
Among my direct descent, I have not found slave holders. I have found a family of Quakers who were abolutionists.
An African-American friend of mine (who is also a Carroll) found that her last name traces back to Charles Carroll of Carrollton, last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence. (His estate included many persons of color). Now, as to if she is a descendant of his or a descendant of a freedman who descends from someone who was held in bond by Charles Carroll.... I do not know.
