William E. was born 24 Dec 1868 to Rev. Alanson & Mary E. (Murch) Carroll, natives of Ohio and Vermont, respectively. Rev. Carroll died in Independence, MO, 17 Aug 1908.
William was educated in Olanthe, KS, and Independence, MO; attended Kansas City high school & graduated in law from the Univ. of Michigan, 1890. He located to Butte, MT, where he set up a law practice. 1907-1909, was assistant city attorney of Butte.
On 27 Sep 1894, Butte, William married Miss Anna Martin, daughter of James and Margaret (Corby) Martin. James Martin was born in England, was a veteran soldier of the Civil War, and died in Truro, MA, 5 Dec 1909. He was a resident of Montana for many years.
