John V. was born 14 Feb 1854, to James and Mary B. (Welsh) Carroll, both born in Ireland, married in New York.James came to the US in 1846 and was a merchant tailor.Both Mary and James died in 1888.
John V. was the only one of five children to survive infancy.He was educated in New York, for one year attended Washington & Lee University; one year at St. Francis Xavier University in New York. Before completing his studies in the medical department of the University of New York, he located to Montana, 1879, where he practiced medicine by special permission of the Secretary of War.In 1886, he returned to the University of New York where he received his medical degree. During the following year he was a member of the staff of the Asylum for the Insane.Doctor Carroll returned to Fort Assinniboine, where he had spent his earlier years in Montana, and on 19 July 1888 he was appointed surgeon at Fort Belknap.1895, did post graduate work at the University of Michigan & then located to Fort Benton, MT, where he continued in practice until 1908.
On 22 Sep 1882, at Fort Assinniboine, John V. married Miss Martha Simpson of St. Paul, MN. Carroll children:John V., Jr., b. 2 May 1884; Grace Mary Virginia, b. 2 Feb 1890, at Fort Belknap (Mrs. Charles W. Houck), Great Falls, MT; Charles Simpson, b. 7 Jun 1895, at Fort Belknap; James Martin, b. 27 June 1899, at Fort Benton, MT.

James M. Carroll died 14 Jun 1952, age 52, Cascade County, MT
