There is a lot of confusion regarding the Carroll/Carrell Family of Isle of Wight, mainly due to their habit of naming their sons after previous generations. However, there are two sources that can help keep the confusion alive! One is the "Virginia Carrolls and Their Neighbors, 1618-1800s" by Elizabeth Carroll Foster and the other is "Colonial Families of Surry and Isle of Wight Counties, Virginia, Volume 2: The Descendents of Robert Harris" by John Brayton. published in 1999.You can find this book at www.genealogy.com
Brayton basically starts the Carroll/Carrell line with Thomas Carrell who marries Mary House and takes it two/three generations. He believes that Thomas was the son of John Carrell Sr., Isle of Wight. However, it is confusing to say which John Carroll/Carrell.Foster thinks there are two listed in the early records.John Carrell who came to Isle of Wight in 1664 with wife Elizabeth, and Richard, John and Mary Carrelland the John Carrell who married Elizabeth Vasser in 1708.However, after pouring over the records, I am tempted to think that there are three John Carrells:
John Carrell the immigrant who came to Isle of Wight in 1664.
John Carrell II, the son of John "the immigrant" whose will is recorded in 1714 and lists an Elizabeth as his wife and children: William, John, Thomas, Joseph, Benjamin, Samuel and Elizabeth.
John Carrell/Carroll III, who married Elizabeth Vasser.Foster has a list of 6 sons for them: Peter (makes sense as Peter was Elizabeth's Father), John, William, Samuel, Daniel and Joseph.
A few of my line (from Thomas who married Mary House)try to put Thomas as the son of Elizabeth Vasser and John Carrell. However, Thomas marries Mary House in 1704 (John marries Vasser in 1708) and Thomas and Mary Carrell are witnesses to the 1714 John Carrell will, therefore, I believe my Thomas was the son of the John Carrell whose will was prvd in 1714.
Brayton has a few more books published in which the Carrell line is in.In fact, there are a series of 8 volumes.
By the way, my line goes from a John Carrell to Thomas Carrell who marries Mary House to James Carroll who marries Mary Gray to Richard Carroll who marries Sarah Wheadon to James Carroll who marries Martha Mangum to Gray Milton Carroll who marries Winnifred Jones to Richard Milton Carroll(brother of Nancy Jane Carroll White and Algernon)and marries unknown to Jabez Algernon Carroll who marries Laura Virginia Smith to Elizabeth Grace Carroll, who was my grandmother.
Research is a little sketchy between Richard and Sarah to Gray Milton and Winnifred. For the rest I have documentation.I just wish I could get to Isle of Wight to do some personal digging.Trying to research the Carrell/Carroll line from Seattle has been frustrating.
