Funny I should stumble onto this discussion. My cousin and I *waves to Dennis* are looking into our great-someodd- grandfather and Dennis thinks he has found a link. And, we've always been told we were related to Jimmy Carter, as well.
Our grandfather was Tilman Henry Carter born between 1830 and 1840 (we thought 1838 but new census data points to 1830).Dennis has found a TH Carter, born to Presley Carter and FNU Barbary, in the 1850 Hall County, GA Census, aged 19 (which would match the later census data placing his YOB as 1830).
Speculation continues that Presley Carter is the brother of John Tillman Carter (Hall Co, m. Catherine Starnes, parents of John Martin Carter, b. 1842, m. Matilda Stephens, moved to Arkansas after the Civil War and had a son named Cicero Tilman Carter), and therefore the son of a Thomas Carter.
According to Dennis, this is the data from the 1850 Hall Co, GA census. Can anyone verify or speculate further that the 19-year-old T.H. that is listed could be Tilman Henry Carter?
Pressley Carter age 50 B. (female) age 49 T J T (male) 24 Catherine age 26 (wife of T J T) T H (male) 19 R (female) 16 O (female) 14 M (female) 11
Also, a question on the Presidential connection. My GA history tells me that Jimmy Carter's father is James Earl Carter, Sr.His grandfather is William Archibald Carter. His great-grandfather is Littleberry Walker Carter and his great-great-grandfather is Wiley Carter. What am I missing in this connection that makes Martin his grandfather?
