Greene County, Tennessee Wills , Rebecca , daughter of John Carter from New Jersey to Greene County , married 1st _____ Hardin 2nd ____ Ross ca. 1812.
One John Carter married Isabel Haveland 9 May 1737 in Piscatoway(Piscataqua River) , New Jersey. Had Daughter Mary born 9 August 1738 who has descendants in Tennessee.( I Joe Carter the one posting info on the forum have Checked this part out and did locate some Carters in New Jersey that are related to some in Tennessee but I have not tied them to This John Carter family below, but I am closing in and getting closer)
John Carter , emigrant from New Jersey settled four and a half miles North of Greenville on the waters of Roaring Fork of Lick Creek( It is possible that some of his brothers came with him , as there are a large number of persons in the county with whom impression exists that they are related to the Carter family in Question , but I am unable to trace relationship.) The said John Carter reared a family of Five sons _ John; Abraham;Daniel;Jacob;and James; and two daughters ; Rebecca ; And Penelope.
Most of the sons of Mr. Carter reared families , John Carter jr. had nine sons : Isaac ; Jacob : Allen ; Elam;John;Benjamine;Ezekiel;Mashack; and Enoch.
Capt. Robert C. Carter who is sixty-eight years old and who did service in the war with Mexico , and who had a Captains Commission and was much engaged in the secret service of the United States during the Civil War , is now living on the farm of his great grand father and has in his possession deeds given by his great uncles ,Daniel and James Carter , to his grandfather ,who was also named John to their intrest in their fathers estate , dated April - July 1814.
Abraham Carter married Miss Rebecca Bryant and reared three daughters to womanhood , soon after which one of them died. The oldest was wedde to the Writer , 22 March 1865 ; so your correspondent is the great great grandson of John Carter. another daughter , Mrs. Josephine Leib , resides at Johnson City, Tennessee.
To return to the 3rd generation , Enoch Carter married Miss Trece Clayton from Maryland and had eight sons ; Daniel ; Lewis ; John ; Alfred ; Ewing C.; Anderson ; Enoch ; And Hardin. All of Jefferson County , Tennessee.
Daniel died an honored member of the Holston Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church and leaves four living brothers , one of whom is Alf. A. Carter Esq. of Talbot , Tennessee.
the branches of this family are too numerous to trace in detail , so we forebear and leave others to finish what is of interest to them. There are other families related to this one by marriage , the Hardin and Ross Families already mentioned , and the weems , Simpsons and many other famlies.
The Carter's are among the largest tax payers in the County if not the largest. In religion they are nearly all Methodist , divided between the Methodist Episcopal South , and Methodist Episcopal. They are divided in Politics , probably a majority Democrats. They have always responded to the call for volunteers to defend their Country , and were almost without exception loyal to the Union during the Civil War. A race of Farmers ,they have time to time migrated to worship tyhe God who had kept them from Indian Massacres , and drank from the same pearley fountain. There also was erected a Methodist Chapel , and ince the Civil War a beautiful country church has taken the place of the old one. On the East Tennessee , Virginia and Georgia Railroad is a Station in Carter County , called "Carter's Depot"
This led to a disarrangement of mail of the two places and those of Carter Station , Greene County , has been changed to Albany.
The first person buried at Carter Staion was Mr. Hardin , whose mocassin was entangled in the brush and cane in a cainbreak on the north bank of Lick Creek and he was overtaken by the Indians, Abraham Carter , there reared a family of four sons and seven daughters. He was buried on the farm now owned by his great-grandson , Peter Simpson , His Sons were : Ezekiel ; Mashack; Enoch; and John A. one of the sons was in the War of 1812.
Daniel settled on Lick Creek near Carter Station and reared two sons : Ellis ; and Elisha. He died 1832 at the age of eighty four and is probably buried on the farm now owned by Peter Simpson.
Jacob , was assasinatted in Louisianna by a Negro.
James migrated to Texas and has considerable property near Bonham , Texas.
Rebecca Carter was married to a Mr. Hardin , who was killed near the famous Lookout Mountain , Chattanooga , Tennessee in a battle with the Indians. She subequently married Mr. Ross , a Number of Hardin and Ross families married and her descendants in this country.
Penelope married Hugh Cain and lived in what is now Hamlin County , her posterity live near what is Morristown.
In the next generation Ezekiel married Miss Stanley and had seven sons : Daniel B. ; Jacob ; Joel ; Ezekiel ; John ; Abraham ; and William , all of whom are deceased except William.
Many of these Carter's removed to other sections , many to the far West.
Green be the grass that grows above the dead , and peace to their memory especially to the one who for eighteen years walked life's rough way by my side , carried her own griefs and sought to asuage my own ; and also to her sainted father and mother , who have followed her to the skies.
And success and happiness to the living.
