I thought I had looked at your site in the recent past but now I don’t know what I was looking at! Your site is very nice as well as extensive. You have done a lot more on the Carter’s than I have. I tie into the Carter’s with Betsey (probable) Carter m Thomas M. Layne (Laine) 24 Nov 1807. I’m descended through Granville with proof. I’m now trying to climb the tree and stuck on the proof of Betsey and Thomas.
The following is my information on Thomas M. Layne:
Baptized Louisa Co., VA Rev William Douglas (Anglican); taxable Amherst 1809, when living next to father & brother Spiller, & through 1826 (except 1818); bought in 1814 estate of William Ware (who had sold to his father earlier); this pair in 1810 had 2 sons under 10 and a couple who lived with them; 1820 he had 3 sons & 2 daus under 10 (so first sons d y) & 2 adult males lived there too; tradition says 10 children, but only 7 survived as legatees of Edward Carter & his dau Elizabeth Layne 1851; Layne spelling adopted about 1850. (From Layne-Lain-Lane Genealogy by Floyd Benjamin Layne; 1962) I’m aware that this source has several errors but was a starting point.
6 November 1835. James H Cashwell, 1; Zachariah Drummond, 2; Elijah Fletcher, 3. . . . $1.00 stock; slaves in right of wife in hands of Mrs. Elizabeth Lane and executor of Edward Carter, by will to children of Thomas and Elizabeth Lane, at death of Elizabeth-- one-seventh. (From The Deeds of Amherst County, Virginia 1827-1852 Books S-Z, Deed Book V, Number 251, page 170) I haven’t checked the actual records yet as I don’t live in VA.
James River Report-- Book 6, Page 308--Returned August 18, 1822. Thos. Laine and David Staples appointed by James River Company under Section 3 of Act of February 28, 1821, for improving navigation of James River and for uniting eastern and western waters by James and Kanawha Rivers. Duties assigned for Amherst County and reported under oath. Average prices from residence at Amherst Mills and freight to and from Bethel; German Mills, and Amherst Mills for three years from January 1, 1820. Sample: Bethel to Richmond on one hundred pounds of tobacco - 56 cents; flour per bbl. - $1.12; other articles per hundred pounds - 56 cents. (From "The Wills of Amherst County, Virginia 1761-1865" by Rev Bailey Fulton Davis; 1985, page 191) Again I haven’t checked the actual records as I don’t live in VA.
Birth and baptism dates from The Douglas Register, page 118. (Ancestry.com. The Douglas register. Provo, UT: Ancestry.com Operations Inc., 2004. Original data: Douglas, William,. You have Thomas d 1826 in Amherst Co, VA. Do you have proof of that?
I’ve recently started working on the Carters and realized there has been much already done on them. They seem very twisted! From what I’m surmising from all the information online, is Edward left his estate to his grandchildren, Garret, Granville, etc. However, Edward can’t be the same Edward that was the son of Peter. Is that correct? Who is the Solomon (Solomon, Milly; Elizabeth; and John (whose will, probated July 15 ,1833, in Amherst, left estate to wife Creasy, and the following children: Mary N., Martha, Jacob D., Shedrach, Wm. C., Elizabeth A., Nancy A., Lucy F., Sarah Anne, Peter D., Verjane, James R., and Caroline M. Carter)? How does he tie into Edward and Betsey? It appears that the general consensus is Griffin would be my Edward’s father. Is that correct? Then who is Griffin descended from?
