The Sarah Cartledge you inquired about is very likely the daughter of James Cartledge and his wife Ruth.James (aged 50-60) is listed in the Decatur Co. GA Census of 1830 (p. 5), and is the only Cartledge in southwest Georgia at the time.I assume that the persons named Cartledge (whatever spelling) that married in Decatur County were his children. These include Mary A. who married Wm. Augustus Griffin, Elizabeth who m. Lewis McSwain, Sarah, Thomas E. who m. Sarah Kersey, James L. who married three times (but I do not know the name of his first wife), Jane who married James Hansford Gray, Franklin A. who married Lovina Whiddon (and may have married a second time).James is not listed in the 1840 census, presumably having died.In the Minutes of the Decatur Co. Court of Ordinary, Bk. A, p. 168, James L. Cartledge and his brother-in-law William Griffin were appointed on 1 Mar 1841 guardians, respectively, of minor children Gilford H. and Franklin A. Cartledge. In the same book, p. 170, Thomas E. Cartledge is appointed to administer the estate of Ruthy Cartledge, late of Decatur County. Unfortunately, I cannot tell you which of Edmund Cartledge's sons was the father of this James.(He was not the son of James who lived in Columbia County as that James had a son James who is well documented in Lincoln Co.; he was probably not the son of Joseph, who apparently had only one son, Samuel, who moved to Madison Co.; he was probabaly not the son of Edmund who moved to Edgefield Co. SC, as there is a Family-Bible-type list of his children. This leaves Samuel (the Baptist preacher in Edgefield Co.) or eldest son John (who either died in the Am. Revolution, or moved back to Chesterfield Co. SC where he is listed in the 1800 Census) as a possible father. I wish I could be more helpful, but this is one of a number of Cartledge mysteries I can't solve.By the way, I can help you a bit if you're interested in tracing the descendants of some of Sarah's siblings. And I would greatly appreciate it if you would let me know where I can document the names of Sarah's children.
