Al, Thanks for your reply. Gee, I wonder if your Alexander and my Andrew could have been brothers. My mother's side of the family have been Presbyterians for 400 years! You made me curious so I dug out my Caruth file which I haven't looked at in a few years. There I found a note to myself, that I forgot about, to look up Ballymena Parishes to inquire about birth certificates on any Caruth, as I had discovered that the woman who married Andrew Jr.was baptised in Ballymena Parish in 1834. She, Mary Jane McCarrell came to America in 1854, and seems to have followed Andrew Jr. who came to America in 1853 with his 7 siblings and mother Jane.So I'm wondering if the Caruth family was from the Ballymena area also. Do you happen to know if Ballymena is near Ballyutoag in Antrim?I just looked on a map of Ireland and couldn't find Ballyutoag. By the way, do you live in Ireland?
Your Alexander died in 1874, my Andrew died in 1889 at age 82, so the years are close enough for them to have been brothers. Also, another Alexander Caruth, age 20, in 1853 accompanied the Caruth family on the ship to America.I suspect he may have been a nephew--maybe the son of your Alexander? The names of Andrew and Jane's children in 1853 on the ship manifest: Alex 20; twins Andrew & Jane 18; Mathew 13; Robert 8; Mary 6; twins William & James 4.
By the way, I have a fabulous photo of Andrew with 3 of his sons taken around 1887, when Andrew was about 80 years old. If you like, I could email it to you if you are interested.
