I am most appreciative of your help - thank you very much.
As to the William Colley, who married Jane Davis, I also do not believe this was our William. You have cleared this up for me - thanks.
Our William's wife, buried with him in Calhoun Co. GA, was named Mary (maiden unknown). Assume this was his wife in Wilkinson Co. GA. If William did not have a previous wife then Catherine's mother would be Mary.
Catherine and her father must have been very strong willed people and this may have been the source of their conflict. She raised very brave sons. Her heart must have been unbearably heavy during the cruel war. In addition to her sons war records the following is what I have on her four children; (Please let me know what needs correcting.)
1. David Cauley (b. 1832 Wilkinson Co. GA, d. ?). Assume he was not married.
2. Elias Cauley (b. 1836, d. 1900). Wife Dorminda Brack (b. 1846/1848, d. ?). Children: George F. Cauley (b. 1868, d. ?, sp. Georgia Leila Stuckey), Mary B. Cauley (b. 1870, d. ?, sp. John B. Stuckey), Sara E. Cauley (b.1871, d. ?, sp. Jack Pierce), John Q. Cauley (b. 1873, d.?, sp. Henriette Taylor), Martha J. Cauley (b. 1875, d. ?, sp. Luther Williams), Elias M. Cauley (b. 1876, d. ?, sp. Robie Mathis), Amanda Cauley (b. 1877, d. ?, sp. Frank Watson), and Anne Cauley (b. 1879, d. ?, sp. Vonnie Ellington).
3. William J. Cauley (b. 1840,d, 1910). Married 1st spouse Martha Cook (b. ?, d, ?) on 11/8/1874. Married 2nd spouse Lydia Faulk (b. ?, d. ?) (Lydia was widow of William Payne [killed in war]. William Payne was son of Ransom Payne and Elsie Cauley [a.k.a. Ailcey Colley] sister to Catherine). Children of William and Martha are: Ella J. Cauley (b 1868, d. ?, sp. W.E. Ussery), Emma E. Cauley (b. 1869, d ?, sp. none?), William H. Cauley Jr.? (b. 1872, d. ?, sp. none?), Benjamin R. Cauley (b. 1877, d. ?, sp. none?), Sara F. Cauley (b. 1879, d. ?, sp. none?), and Henry J. Cauley (b. 1880, d. ?, sp. Gertrude Pharis).
4. Jane F. Cauley (b. 1832, d. ?, sp. none). (Just speculation on my part but maybe Jane was the "Peggy" we have been looking for? May never know.)
The Elizabeth Cauley and John Freeman confusion has been a very large headache for me. I came to the conclusion that this Elizabeth is not the daughter of our William Colley (a.k.a. Cauley). However she may have been a close relative. I am adding the names of Elizabeth (Cauley) Freeman's parents and the dates you have provide to my records for future study. (You have some good thinking on William B. Colley. The Jane Cauley buried next to Elizabeth may have been wife of William B.)
Our William's daughter is the Elizabeth Colley who married Sparkman Bowen. William Colley's Will reads in part " ... heirs of his deceased daughter Elizabeth Bowen former wife of Sparkman Bowen ...".
I hope I can take a trip to see the old cemetery in Wilkinson Co. Otha do you know of any publications I can buy that would be good sources of Colley/Cauley information?
