I have to say that in reading all of the genealogy written about this family 85 % of it is pure fiction. There is no record found for Henry Caviness who was supposed fatherof Henry ,Matthew,John,Richard,Fredrick and Amos. Not in NC so many sites say that the children Henry ,Matthew and John etc are born in Edgecomb,Co NC .Where is the evidence ,The only record I found for this family in NC prior to 1800 is for son Henry who married an Eleanor,he and only he was in halifax Co from what he signed the Halifax petition,I can determine ,HenrySr and his family are never found in NC.He is found in Amelia Co Va ,then Lunenburg and after a portion of Lunenburg became Mecklenburg Co . he lived in that county also .He is never found in NC There was a large family who spelled their name Cavenaugh who did live in the area of Halifax ,and Edgecomb Co but there living there coincided with location of the Caviness family in Va. In short those Cavenah,or Cavenough people are not related .Matthew also lived in NC in Granville just across the line from Va.I do not understand how a genealogist can take something that is not so withno evidence and make it appear as if it were fact.Of course I welcome anyone to try and show me the error of my ways, some deed with the name, some census, anything .Henry Caviness son of the immigrant Henri Cabanis, and his wife did not live in NC .Henry Cabanis was not the infant on the boat with Henri and his wife.Henry Caviness did not marry Jane Allen at least not before 1731.I doubt he ever did. There is a strange Jane Caviness or Cabanis what ever she is found on the records on a plantation called three fountainsA Jeanne Cabanis she witnessed will of David Peyre wife Judith and son Phillip, this plantation was as I recall on the Santee River inCraven Co S C and is associated with the French settlement there. In 1735 a St Cabanas witness to Chas Richbourgthis in Berkleyon the Santee River settlement.and an Es cavinis was witness to Rene Richbourg will.in 1737 .a Jane Cabonis is found on the tite list for Amelia Co Va.and again in 1746 only she is listed as Jean. Then we go back to the Santee River settlement in S C Charlotte La Tour will dated 1754 mentions all of the then living childern and grandchildren of Capt Nathaniel Broughton she devises to Jane Cabanis her cousin and Janes grandchildren . The point I am trying to make is this whole genealogy is not finished.Who is this Jean or Jane ??? Did she travel back and forth from Amelia to Craven Co SC or was there more than one???
