The French name Chagnon is a derivative of the French name Chagne. The name is of local origin,, belonging as it does to that categry of names derived from the place where a man once dwelt or held land.In medieval times, prior to the establishment of a formal system of hereditary surames, an individual was often identified with his place of residence or with topographical featre which distnguished it.In this case the name is a regional variant of the surname Chene, derived fromthe Old French term"chesne" (12 century) which literally signifies "an oak tree".thus it would seem that the place of residence of the original bearer was characterized by an oak.
Variants of the name Chene,, such a Chagne or Chaigne, spelt withthe medial "g" are generally found chiefly in the western parts of France in the region of Bourgogne.Other popular derivative include chagnard, Chagnaud, Chagnoux, Chagnol, Chagnol etc.
