I was delighted to see your posting, with its detailed biographical sketch that I'd not reviewed before. As it shows, and as confirmed by the FGR that Bill Mennel posted (I have the same FGRs here as does Bill), John W. Chamberlin was the son of William M. Chamberlin, b. 5 Mar 1825, NJ, who married Mary J. Bergen, b. 21 Mar 1834.IGI records confirm that this is Mary Jane Bergen, daughter of George Peter Bergen and Mary Mount, natives of New Jersey, and early settlers in Lemon Twp., Butler Co., OH.William M. Chamberlin and his family are listed in the 1860 census as follows:
- 1860 Census, Turtle Creek, Warren Co., OH, William M. Chamberlain, p. 268, #445/444, date not given, age 35, farmer, -/$1700, b. NJ; Mary J., age 26, b. NJ; Jane E., age 8, school, b. OH; Hezekiah, age 3, b. OH; Mary A., age 1, b. OH
This census confirms his birth year and place as c1825, NJ.I can't actually prove it, but I'm quite confidant that he is the same person as William Chamberlin [LN668], b. c1825, prob. Perrinville, Monmouth Co., NJ, son of John(7) Chamberlin, b. 22 Mar 1784, Hightstown, Middlesex Co., NJ [John(6), John(5), John(4), Henry(3), John(2), Henry(1)].John(7)'s wife was Jane Mount, b. c1788, NJ, daughter of Hezekiah & Mary Mount.David Conrad Chamberlin's FGR for this family lists 5 children, including William b. c1825 (about whom he says "nothing further known"), and states that the family removed to Ohio c1847, where they lived in Carlisle, Warren Co.DCC believes them to be the same couple who lived for awhile in NY State, as follows, with their son William:
- 1840 Census, Cherry Creek, Chautauqua Co., NY, John Chamberlin, p. 293: 00010001-00011001 (living next door to Hezekiah)
- 1850 Census, Cherry Creek, Chautauqua Co., NY, J. Chamberlin, p. 127, #1702/1761, age 66, farmer, $750, b. NJ; Jane, age 62, b. NJ; Mary, age 40, b. NY; William, age 25, farm laborer, b. NJ; also John Graves, age 6, b. NY, attends school.John Graves is perhaps a grandson, per DCC, and I see he is perhaps the same person as John H. Graves, b. c1839, Villinona, Chatauqua Co., NY, whose daughter Mary Jane "Jennie" Graves, married, 19 Dec 1893 in Kansas, David Wheeler Chamberlin, grandson of Hezekiah, I see from my records here.
William M. Chamberlin's brothers Hezekiah and John S. also settled in Carlisle, Warren Co., OH, and many of their descendants have been traced. Some of Hezekiah's sons settled in Spring Hill Twp., Johnson Co., KS, which may explain why your family might have spent some time there in 1859 when William's son Hezekiah was born, according to the bio. sketch (though the census shows this child was born in OH).Please do contact me via Email, if you wish to discuss this information in greater detail.Probably with additional effort, I can help you prove the connection I discussed above.
