William...evidence from a book, "Chancey, Chauncey Family History" by Betty Curington Wright, copyright 1991, suggests that the surname was Chancey (or Chancy, in some cases)until about 1900, or shortly there after, when A Chancey family in Florida, had the surname researched. The researchers determined that the surname was actually Chauncey. The Florida Chanceys then changed the surname to Chauncey. At about this same period in time, the Chancy's of Columbus County, North Carolina did the same, as did another branch of Chancys that removed to Tennessee in the late 1800s. This surname change, by several families, in several states, alludes to close communication between these different branches, wouldn't you agree?.
