Sharon, I'm confused. This is in reply to what you wrote:
"I have the death certificates of James M. Cheatwood and his wife Lee Ann (Ferguson) Cheatwood. His death certificate states that he was born 10/16/1846 in Roanoke, VA and died June 5, 1931. His wife, Lee Ann (Ferguson) Cheatwood died July 17, 1933. His certificate does not indicate his father, whom I take from you notes to be Madison. Was Madison's wife's name also Leanna? The certificate also states his last wife's name to be Burkett. Do you have any information on Burkett?"
In the second to the last sentence you said, "The certificate also states his LAST wife's name to be Burkett.".Whose last wife were you speaking of...Madison Cheatwood or James M. Cheatwood?I know that the Leanna who married Madison has been without a surname for a long time, so she could be the one you're speaking of.But the Leeanna Ferguson who married James M. Cheatwood in 1876 appears to have been married prior according to this census record researched by Carolyn Fairall:…..1880 Census Roanoke Co, VA, Cave Springs Dist, ED 62-131-13: J. M. Cheatwood 33 b 1847 VA(VA-VA), L. Cheatwood 32 wife b 1848 VA(VA-VA), Ida P. Cheatwood 3 dau b 1877 VA(VA-VA), Fletcher Cheatwood 1 son b 1879 VA(VA-VA), M. L. Ferguson 11 dau(SD?) b 1869 VA(VA-VA).
So my question is was it possible that on the death certificate of James M. Cheatwood it meant the maiden name of his own wife Lee Ann (or Leeanna) was Burkett prior to her marrying a Ferguson and having the daughter, M.L. Ferguson?Or did you mean that James M. Cheatwood had been married prior to Leeanna and his previous wife's name had been Burkett?
Sorry if this sounds as confusing to you as it does to me... Julia
