I've been researching about 4 years trying to piece the Cheek family into my Couch family of 1790 Spartanburg/Laurens, SC area. The closest dna connection of 36/37 is John Cheek of Anson who seems to spend time in a commmunity outside Philadelphia, PA after his father's death. Looking for PA connections led me to Anthony Checkley, b1636 Northamptonshire, England.I began by looking at English immigrants and ports of entry. One of the records indicated John and William Checkley, from Northamptonshire, Preston Parva, planned on settling in Drake's Boston. This information led me to the Christ Church records of Boston, MA.This record rambles on year by year documenting families in marriages, births and deaths.I also studied Trinity Lutheran Church Records (by Debra D Smith and Rev. Frederick Weiser) which documents the history of their reverends. This history is a narrative from reverends remembering events and connections so it can be a little confusing. This is the summation that connects to Anthony Checkley. An Anthony and his son John Cheeke were mentioned in a few records in Rappahannock, VA during this time frame.
Anthony Checkley b@1636 claims to be the son of William from Northamptonshire, England and says in one of these records that he traveled with his Uncle John.Immigration records show John and William Checkley entered the country together in 1645. The Lutheran Church records state that reverend John Checkley b 1680, was the son of John Checkley, was ordained at the U. of Oxford in 1735, and died Feb 15, 1753 at age 73.These records continue that Samuel Checkley, brother of Anthony, came from Southwark, Eng in 1670. John came too (I'm not sure whether this means in 1645 or a different John in 1670).
The records indicate John Cheeckley (now with the ee), Anthony's uncle was b@1609 Northamptonshire, England, arrived in Boston 1645, and was made a freeman in 1648. John Checkley married @1651 to Ann Eires (daughter of Mr. Simon Eires who died Nov 10, 1658 and who mentioned Ann Checkley in his will). His marriage was performed by William Hibbins, His children are found in Boston, Christ Church records; John b April 21, 1653 noted as pg 40, Boston Records of Births and Baptism; Anne b April 2nd, 1659 d June 20, 1661; Samuel b Nov 26, 1661; Benjamin b Oct 1st, 1662; William b July 3, 1664; Ann b Aug 4, 1669. Anthony Checkley married a 2nd time in 1678 to Lydia Scottow Gibbs, daughter of Joshua Scottow and widow of Benjamin Gibbs but they didn't have any children together.
Anthony Checkley b@1636, married @1661 to Hannah Wheelwright, (daughter of Rev. John Wheelwright). Hannah, wife of Anthony is mentioned in a will by Samuel Hutchinson whose wife is sister to John Wheelwright and who leaves an inheritance to Hannah Checkley in 1667 Boston, MA.Anthony and Hannah have children recorded in Christ Church records. John b Dec 30, 1663; Sarah b June 18, 1668; Elizabeth b May 8, 1672; Mary b Oct 14, 1673; and Hannah b Dec 19, 1674.Rev John Bayley married Hannah Checkley to Lt. Governor John Adams b Dec 3, 1661, on Oct 19, 1693. Their son John Adams b 1705, went to preach in Rhode Island and then Philadelphia, PA where he died unexpectedly in 1740 at 36 years of age.
The research records indicate that Samuel Checkley was b Oct 14, 1653 in Northamptonshire, England and arrived in Boston, MA Aug 3, 1670, that he married Mary Scottow (also a daughter of Joshua Scottow) around 1681 and had a family that remained in the Boston area.
There is no mention of the William Checkley that traveled with John b 1609 and William Checkley in 1645.Perhaps Anthony travelled with John when he was only 9, perhaps on a second trip...?
Is this the Anthony that is in the Cheek research? He is documented as only having one son, John 1663.This John Checkley would be 21 at the same time John Cheek was in the land deed dated 1684 Rappahannock, VA.Cheeke researchers suggest Anthony had a probable son, John, who was mentioned in the same time frame in a Rappahannock, VA court record. What do you think about these possibilities, any one researching this connection?Cynthia Couch Rodriguez
