Hopelessly Stuck on Chellis Tree!
Hopelessly stuck!
A few months ago I decided to try and organize boxes of old photos and documents that where left to me by my mother and grandmother. My Grandmother was Hilda (Hemme) Chellis and my mother was Margaret Helen Chellis.
One clue I have is a note my Grandmother Hilda Chellis sent with some glass items she was passing onto me back in the 80’s.It reads…"This vase like glassware is a very old one. This is the history as far as I know.First owned by Mary and lra J Chellis. Mary maiden name- Mary Rouyer. Then owned by their daughter Helen Chellis Schneider. Then owned by Helens son James and his wife Hilda Chellis. Used for extra flatware on the table, celery sticks, green onions or whatever. Can not remember when I used it last.”
From this note and an assortment of documents, death certificates, photos etc. I believe that my Chellis family tree would follow these lines…
Stewart Russell Chellis. Born on 14 Mar 1778 in VT, USA. Stewart Russell died in Lake Champlain (Chittenden) VT, on 9 Aug 1830; he was 52. On 15 Dec 1800 when Stewart Russell was 22, he married Margaret Dort (Dart), daughter of Timothy Dart & Margaret Taylor, in VT, USA. Born on 23 Apr 1784 in Tolland, CT. Margaret died in McKean, Erie, Pennsylvania, USA, on 6 Nov 1844; she was 60.
Johial (1801-1879)
Elan (m) (1804-)
Almina (or Elmina) (1810-)
Sabrina (1811-1889)
Stewart Russell (1813-~1882)
Ira (1814-1860)
Titus Dort (1816-1890)
Ira Chellis. Born on 30 Sep 1814 in Vermont , USA. Ira died in McKean, Erie, PA, USA, on 22 Mar 1860; he was 45. On 1 Feb 1838 when Ira was 23, he married Lucretia Foster, daughter of Martin Foster (Forster) & Elizabeth Bowers, in Mill Creek, Erie, PA. Born abt 1822 in New York, New York, USA. Lucretia died in Millcreek, Erie, PA, on 1 Feb 1860; she was 38.
They had one child:
Ira H (1855-)
Ira H Chellis. Born on 4 Sep 1855 in Pennsylvania , Ira H married Mary A Rouyer, daughter of John Rouyer & Ellen. Born abt 1862.
According to the 1900 and 1910 Census they had the following children:
John Ira 1884
Helen 1886
Ina 1903
James Anthony 1905-1950
This is where the tree gets messy. The note my Grandmother wrote doesn’t mention a fathers name for James Anthony Chellis (my grandfather). On the 1900 Census the family members are listed as Ira age 43, Mary age 38, John, age 16 and Helen, age 14.The 1910 census for the same family lists Ira H Chellis age 52, Mary Chellis age 49,John Chellis age 27, Ina Chellis age 7, James Chellis age 4. Where did Helen go and where do James and Ina come from so late in life? Ina is listed as daughter, James is simply listed as James.
What is really odd is that I have an original death certificate for James Anthony Chellis and all it says under mothers name is Helen – there is a line where her maiden name should be.It also states that fathers name is Ira.
I would really love to know if this tree is right or wrong, what happened to Ina and John Chellis, when did Mary and Ira H die, and who are the real parents of my grandfather James Anthony Chellis? Was Helen Chellis from the 1900 census the mother of Ina and James or is there another Helen Chellis that I haven't found?Anyone know I would love to hear from you via [email protected] have lots of photos and documents I would be more than happy to share.
Katherine
PS...I also have the divorce papers and documents that my Grandmother sent to PA after my Grandfather - James Anthony Chellis died in 1950.The names listed on the court documents are James Anthony Chellis and Helen Cecilia M Schneider.I belive that Helen Cecilia M Schneider was my Great Grandmother but can't find her anywhere. Also my cousin and I both remember our mothers telling us that Helen's nickname was Nellie.
